Joda Time Auto Timestamping Issue on Grails 1 1 1
Joda Time Auto Timestamping Issue on Grails 1 1 1
Ive not upgraded most of my code to Grails 1.1.1 yet so I hadnt noticed this problem until it was brought to my attention by Manuel Vio on the grails-user mailing list.
I raised a bug a few days ago around the fact that GORM identifies Joda Time types (and presumably any non-default property type) as a one-to-one association. Up to now the only problem this caused me was that it means the Joda Time plugin has to do some slightly hacky tricks in the scaffolding templates to prevent crashes when Grails tries to render the properties as though they were associated domain instances only to find they have no id property. However, on Grails 1.1.1 the bug is causing a nasty failure on auto-timestamping.
Under Grails 1.1 you can use a Joda DateTime for an auto-timestamped fields:
DateTime dateCreated
DateTime lastUpdated
static mapping = {
dateCreated type: PersistentDateTime
lastUpdated type: PersistentDateTime
}
These behave exactly like the regular Date fields with those names, i.e. theyre set automatically on save and update. In Grails 1.1.1 the same class will fail on save with a GroovyRuntimeException Could not find matching constructor for: java.lang.Object(java.lang.Long).
There is a (somewhat strange) workaround - declare the timestamped fields as non-lazy!
DateTime dateCreated
DateTime lastUpdated
static mapping = {
dateCreated type: PersistentDateTime, lazy: false
lastUpdated type: PersistentDateTime, lazy: false
}
Digging into the Grails code a little I found that association properties have their getter wrapped in a lazy-loading proxy. Since GORM thinks Joda Time properties are associations, this happens to them. The auto-timestamping code initialises the properties using property.getType().newInstance(System.currentTimeMillis()). Unfortunately, because property is actually the lazy-load proxy rather than the real property property.getType() returns Object.

Judge Posner Questions Whether Owner of Patent on Heart Healthy Cookies Would Be Entitled To Nontrivial Damages
Judge Posner Questions Whether Owner of Patent on Heart Healthy Cookies Would Be Entitled To Nontrivial Damages
Last year I reported that Brandeis University had joined its exclusive licensee GFA Brands in suing a number of cookie companies for infringing its patents directed towards methods of "Increasing the HDL Level in the HDL/LDL Ratio in Human Serum by Balancing Saturated and Polyunsaturated Dietary Fatty Acids." The case is being heard by Judge Richard Posner in the Northern District of Illinois. On March 16, Judge Posner issued an interesting order in the case, ordering the parties to brief the issue of whether plaintiffs, if successful, would be entitled to nontrivial damage awards. Here is the order:
I am concerned whether the plaintiffs if successful in establishing liability will be entitled to nontrivial damages awards. Suppose the defendants infringed the asserted patents but that none of the defendants marketed its products as low in bad cholesterol (LDL) or high in HDL, or as having a high ratio of HDL to LDL; and suppose further that the defendants obtained no cost savings by infringing the patents rather than using some non?infringing recipe and that neither Brandeis nor its licensee GFA Brands lost any business as a result of the infringement. On those assumptions, would the plaintiffs have any claim for damages, whether compensatory or punitive, or restitution? I would like the parties to address this question in briefs filed simultaneously by close of business on April 2.In other words, if the cookie manufacturers are not profiting from the healthy cookie recipe by using it to market their cookies, and the recipe does not cut their costs, then how has the patent owner been harmed, and what does Brandeis want the court to do? Perhaps the answer is that customers do pay a premium for healthier cookies, even if the cookie manufacturer does not use that information in marketing its products. And in any event, Brandeis/BFA would presumably like to get an injunction against the cookie manufacturers, as leverage to demand royalty payments, or to keep them off the market, thus reducing competition in the market for healthy cookies. But if the defendant cookie manufacturers do not profit from the technology, perhaps they will simply change their recipe, perhaps rendering their cookies less healthy but no less profitable.
Thanks to Docket Navigator for making me aware of this order.

Forty-five years after the phrase Houston, we ve had a problem here, became cemented in popular culture, two men instrumental in the safe return of Apollo 13 shared their experiences as part of Georgia Regents University s Alumni Weekend.

SLIDESHOW
James Lovell, the mission s commander who uttered the phrase shortly after an on-board explosion crippled the spacecraft, elektro and Apollo 13 flight control director Gene Kranz visited elektro the school s Maxwell Theatre.
Apollo 13 was to be the third mission to land on the moon and launched at 2:13 p.m. April 11, 1970, at Kennedy Space Center. The crew consisted of Lovell; John L. Swigert Jr., the command module pilot; and Fred W. Haise Jr., the lunar module pilot.
With the phrase Failure is not an option projected on a screen behind him beneath NASA s Mission Control emblem, Kranz told the crowd that their story is one of teamwork, and that only through leadership, trust and strong values was Apollo 13 capable of returning home safely.
It wasn t the first time the space program was faced with adversity. Kranz said he kept photos of past failures in his office, including one of the Apollo 1 fire that killed three astronauts, as a reminder that cockiness has no place in his high-risk business.
These were the kinds of things that really challenged the team, he said. The great thing was, we had a closed-loop elektro training system and a set of diabolical instructors who would run us through the gears to make sure that no matter what happened we maintained the poise and get on the right direction toward the solution. elektro
When an exploding oxygen tank rocked Apollo 13 three days into the mission, Lovell said, he felt a sinking sensation that he might never return home. But the crew wasted little time panicking, seeking refuge in the lunar module while Mission Control rallied to relay solutions from more than 200,000 miles away.
If I was waiting for some miracle to happen and I got in some sort of fetal position, I d still be there, Lovell said. Between Mission Control and the crew, we solved elektro one crisis at a time as they came up.
Lovell said he s had plenty elektro of time to reflect on the days he s spent in zero gravity. He still remembers the sights, smells and sounds of space, and still has difficulty wrapping his head around his accomplishments, with 713 flight hours in space logged.
He was among the first three people to see the dark side of the moon as part of the Apollo 8 crew. He said he ll never forget how Earth looked from the window of a spacecraft elektro or how he cheated death once again when he splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. elektro

Jezebels Article on Contouring is Bad and They Should Feel Bad
Jezebels Article on Contouring is Bad and They Should Feel Bad
I should probably preface this article by saying that I used to read Jezebel, so there is a tiny part of my heart with a slightly mushy spot for them. (Hell, I was a starred commenter back when that was a thing.) However, that mushy spot immediately hardens to stone when they pull some sort of fucking bullshit, which seems to be approximately daily.
Jezebels article on contouring, entitled "Lets Just Stop With the Contouring Already" by Tracie Morrissey is fucking bullshit and I am going to explain why, point by insipid point. (Note: I did include a link to the original article, but if you want to avoid giving Jezebel pageviews, the entire article is included within this article. All you need to do is read the bolded parts below.) Is it the most bullshit thing that has ever graced the halls of Jezebel? Definitely not. But I am grumpy about it, and I am going to grump in your general direction.
Point #1: "Sure, love is a battlefield, but makeup isnt supposed to look like war paint."
This quote presumably was supposed to be witty, but, in my opinion, things that are witty are supposed to make sense. "Love is a battlefield" does not make sense when talking about makeup. It is not relevant. You need to have some sort of bridge to the topic at hand. Makeup is not love.
Still, the thing I take umbrage at here is that Tracy presumes that there is a way that makeup is "supposed" to look. One of the awesome and amazing things about makeup is that you can do whatever the fuck you want with it. Minor quibble, but I suppose we can move on.
Point #2: Still, women are drawing stripes all over their faces and taking liberties with bronzer in an attempt to create some kind of illusionbut they simply cant escape the cold hard reality that they look like fucking idiots.
Calling women "fucking idiots" is not helpful.
Point #3: I blame Kim Kardashian for this. Shes been a real champion of contouring.

If you think that Kim Kardashian invented contouring, I can only assume that you have literally never looked at celebrity faces.
Contouring is not new.

So, what is it about Kim Kardashian that is different from the thousands and thousands of contoured faces we have seen for our entire lives?
As far as I can tell, the only difference is that she is open about her process.
Point #4: Her influence can be seen on the mangled faces of several reality TV stars. (From left, Lilly Ghalichi, Melissa Gorga, Nene Leakes.)

The other day, I tried something new with my foundation and it was not a success. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror at the dentist and my foundation was melting off my face. That doesnt mean I should never wear foundation again. It just means that on that particular day, I screwed up. Since Im not a celebrity, no one photographed me, so the only people who know about that particular error are me and my dentist (and now, all of you). When youre a celebrity, though, people see when you screw up. But that doesnt mean its not okay to make an error or two.
Point #5: Here are two young women having a conversation on Teen Mom 2. They are classmates in makeup school. This is what your aesthetic future looks like, America.
![]() |
I literally dont even know why this would be included. Is the point that teenagers sometimes dont do their makeup well? When I was a teenager I wore bright orange foundation, had bushy caterpillar eyebrows, didnt blend my eyeshadow, and drew long, wonky cat eyes with a pencil eyeliner. I am not sure that a teenager with imperfect makeup is really newsworthy, or something that would affect the decisions I make about my own, no-longer-teenage face.
Also, why are you spending your time making fun of the way that teenagers look?
Point #6: But its not just reality stars whore walking around looking like the cast of Zoobilee Zoo. Professional entertainers, like Nicki Minaj and Julie Chen, pay people to do this to their faces.

Point #8: But seriously, you dont need to reconstruct your face with a series of complicated shading and highlighting. It doesnt make you look more beautiful. It only makes you look like a second-rate drag queen. If you are unable to wash your face without recreating the Turin Shroud then you are wearing entirely too much crap on your face.
For every photo you show me with less than flattering contouring...

It depends on how you measure it
It depends on how you measure it
Once you have a good recipe there is usually no one to blame for a bad outcome other than yourself. Well, occasionally you can tell that the eggs were too big or the stove is new. My eccentric grandaunt used to prohibit us from entering the kitchen during baking and blame us for disturbing the cakes gestation period if it didnt rise. But there is really not much more. One cup of flour is one cup of flour anywhere in the world, one tablespoon of butter is one tablespoon of butter. Or is it?
This weeks article in the New York Times surprises us by suggesting that it is not. It refers to an experiment when ten different people were asked to scoop 1 cup of flour and pour it into a bowl. The weight of flour in the individual bowls varied between 4 and 6 ounces depending on the strength and technique of scooping used by each participant. This meant that some of these people may be making a cake with 1.5 times as much flour as others.
What else can we use instead of the traditional and universal cup and spoon volume measures? The weight (mass), says the article advocating for simple kitchen scales. Note that weight is equal mass as long as we cook on earth.

Lets recollect some math and physics:
If the mass of 1 cup of flour in the bowls varied from 4 to 6 ounces, it means that the density is to blame. Faster scooping, scooping up vs down techniques, different storage, type of flour, shape of the cup all of them can influence the density of the flour. To get the same amount in your recipe rely on mass.
The difference may be even more drastic when dealing with grated cheese. According to the article the heavier shavings of a box grater can fill a cup with twice as much cheese as billowy ribbons of machine-shaved cheese.
So, get yourself a kitchen scale for the next holidays. Use mass-based recipe source and you will:
- Get consistent recipe-matching results every time.
- Easily double or halve the recipe.
- Have less stuff to clean. You can use only one mixing bowl by slowly adding ingredients into it directly from the containers and zeroing weight on the scale after each addition.
What about your old favorite volume-based recipes? One cup of oil in moms sweet corn bread, one cup of honey in the Rosh haShana cake. Should you just convert them to mass? This Pyrex measuring cup clearly marks 1 cup volume as 8 oz mass.
For water measurements: 8 oz = 1 cup x Water Density
Oil, melted chocolate and honey are obviously denser than water. Higher density gives higher mass: around 10 oz for one cup of oil, and 12 oz for one cup of honey. So, beware of the Pyrex cup.
It is just you now in the kitchen with your scale and math.

Japanese man rescued after night at sea on surfboard
Japanese man rescued after night at sea on surfboard

The 37-year-old told police a current had pulled him out to sea off Bulli Beach, 80km (50 miles) south of Sydney on Thursday evening.
Sailors on the MSC Damla spotted him floating about 6km offshore and pulled him on board using a lifebuoy.
They gave him food, drink and warm clothing and contacted the authorities. A pilot vessel from Port Kembla returned him to shore. He was taken to hospital but discharged shortly afterwards. The man was in "remarkably good spirits", MSC Australias managing director Kevin Clarke said.
"Our crew are always being observant of marine traffic, but it is exceptionally fortunate they were able to spot this man waving for help from his surf board," he said.
The man had spent six hours trying to paddle back to shore before running out of energy, Inspector Darren Wood said.
He is estimated to have spent about 16 hours in the water but temperatures only dropped to 21 degrees during the night, preventing him from getting hypothermia, the Australian broadcaster ABC reported.
The safety organisation Surf Life Saving New South Wales said surfers should tell other people of their plans before setting out and be aware of local conditions, ABC said.

Julian Assange will present a Special Keynote speech at the 19th International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2013), presented by the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) at the University of Sydney on Thursday 13 June 2013 at 5.30pm.
The Wikileaks founder will address conference delegates and a small public audience via live video link from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.
Julian Assange has a unique insight into the futility, or otherwise, of resisting the incursion of the digital into every aspect of our lives.
In systems under constant and multiple pressures there will always be leaks. Wikileaks exists because of this, embracing the digital, exploiting the ubiquity of digitised information: Resistance is Fertile.
Artists creatively investigate the possibilities and push the limits of new technologies, helping us to imaginatively experience and critically reflect on their implications for life in the 21st century.
The ISEA2013 program explores the ways art and new technologies are used in the service of power, protest and resistance.
