Is Quirky a Good Thing

Is Quirky a Good Thing

Is it ever worthwhile to de-quirk a novel?

My book has one seriously odd character: a home-schooled narrator. The consensus among replying agents, however, is that the voice is just too "quirky". Fair enough, but now what?

Is a complete re-write in order? And a re-query to follow?

Or should I trash the manuscript, hit the bottle, and move on?
Yes, sometimes it is worthwhile to revise this sort of thing.

Quirky can be great-- it can mean charming, funny, unique. But "too quirky"... If youre getting a lot of this feedback, I would start to wonder if what the agents really mean is weird and distancing.

The right amount of quirky reminds people of themselves, their own uniquenesses. Too much, though, and you can lose your audience, especially among kids, who can be pretty judgemental about weirdness in others.

Still there are good examples of very unusual behaviors and world views that absolutely work for the book theyre in... Because the author has taken the trouble to make them make sense for that character-- to show us why they have these quirks.

I would suggest that you ask yourself which of your characters quirks are serving the character development enough that its worth going to the trouble of showing the reader why the character has those quirks... and which quirks you maybe just added for "flavor"-- as a shorthand for character development. I have a hunch that some of those quirks just arent earning their keep in your story.

Jurrassic Park is a triumph for dino theme parks Build more dinosaur theme parks now!

Jurrassic Park is a triumph for dino theme parks Build more dinosaur theme parks now!

Fukushima is a triumph for nuke power: Build more reactors now!
Quake + tsunami = 1 minor radiation dose so far

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03/14/fukushiima_analysis/

Industrial espionage + life finding a way = only 5 dead so far

Analysis Ingens dinosaur theme park, Jurassic Park, has performed magnificently in the face of a disaster hugely greater than it was designed to withstand, remaining entirely safe throughout and sustaining only minor damage. The unfolding Jurassic Park story has enormously strengthened the case for advanced nations – including Japan – to build more Dinosaur based Amusement Parks, in the knowledge that no imaginable disaster can result in serious problems.

Lets recap on whats happened so far. The tropical storm which hit on Friday was terrifically powerful, shaking the entire island. Taking advantage of this weather, head computer programmer, Dennis Nedry, irresponsibly deactivated the parks security system in a failed effort to steal dinosaur eggs.

If dinosaur theme parks were merely as safe as they are advertised to be, there should have been a major failure right then. As the dinosaurs were no longer held in pens by electric fences a runaway dinosaur swarm could have ensued involving thousands of dinosaurs – probably resulting in the worst thing that can happen to a properly designed dinosaur theme park: everyone gets eaten. In this case the only thing to do is evacuate the island and wait: no actual disaster will take place, but the park is a total writeoff and cleansing the park of dinosaurs will be difficult and take a long time. Eventual cleanup will be protracted and expensive.

In fact, though the security breach was far beyond design limits, the staff were able to reboot the parks computer system: triumph number one. Door locks slammed shut, blocking out the dinosaurs.

However, the dinosaurs were still on the loose at this point: carnivorous reptiles that can sometimes try to eat humans. They have short lives however and cannot breed, so their numbers decay to insignificant levels within days of a shutdown, but for that time the pens will still release a few dinosaurs – and this is still a lot of dangerous reptiles. If they are not dealt with, they can eventually break through the fences, though the resulting mess will not be nearly as bad as a dinosaur swarm.

Thus, even with the computer systems rebooted, the park still needs to be left for some days until the "residual" dinosaurs die away and so power and water need to be supplied for this purpose. Backup door locks came on at all the park buildings without trouble, despite the way-beyond-spec hit from the security breach: triumph number two.

This is obviously emotive stuff – large escaping flesh eating reptiles – even if they are harmless to anyone off the island (the workers inside are in protected control rooms or wearing protective gear - hard hats, the goggles that DO work, etc).

So the situation is being managed and the buildings are being kept secure by rebooting the parks computer.

Health effects have been pretty much zero. At times there have been heightened attacks on staff inside the buildings by short lived dinosaurs due to the pen releases – sometimes enough that an unprotected person next to a dinosaur might have sustained a years normal dose of dinosaur teeth in an hour. This is not particularly terrifying, really – but it is being reported under scaremongering headlines. Another thing the weekend reporters have missed was the fact that all but tiny traces of the dinosaurs were disappearing before they could even reach the buildings; there is essentially no health hazard to people living outside the island. Precautionary evacuations and tests were just that: precautionary.

In fact only one person so far has sustained any measurable injury above normal: a plant worker, according to staff, has lost an arm in the maintenance compound. Once that member of staff is located they will be informed their arm has been found. Other workers have been chased by velociraptors, T-Rexes, etc, but quite frankly being a dinosaur theme park worker at Jurassic Park has been pretty safe compared to the number of automobile deaths each year.

So to sum up: the park is well on its way to shutdown. At no time have their operators come even close to running out of options. The safety systems did not come even close to failing, despite being tested far beyond what they had been designed to take. One person has sustained a small dose of being swallowed by a T-Rex which need cause him no concern.

The whole sequence of events is a ringing endorsement for dinosaur amusement park safety. If this – basically nothing – is what happens when year-old systems are pushed five times and then some beyond their design limits, new dinosaur theme parks much safer yet would be able to resist an asteroid strike without problems.

But you wouldnt know that from looking at the mainstream media. Ignorant fools are suggesting on every hand that Jurrassic Parks problems actually mean fresh obstacles in the way of dinosaur theme parks here in the UK, Europe and the US.

That can only be true if an unbelievable level of public ignorance of the real facts, born of truly dreadful news reporting over the weekend, is allowed to persist.

Just a Few Reminders

Just a Few Reminders

1.  Please remember to remind your child to complete his/her reading for book clubs.  (See post below about needing juice and comments about reading.)

2.  Keep working on those multiplication facts!  We did not get a lot done last week with facts due to the early outs but will get back at it this week.  Each 3B student needs to let me know when they are ready to be assessed as it is not a "whole class" activity each day.

3. We are finishing up our unit in science on Simple Machines by completing our Keynote presentation.  Students will publish their Keynote soon on their student blogs.  Stay tuned.  We will then be moving back into Social Studies.

4.  Our focus for literacy has been recognizing how prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of base words, sequencing, story elements/plot, and words with multiple meaning.  These are the focus strategies and skills for our Lead 21 theme.  Within our book clubs, groups focus on different strategies, including sequencing, character analysis and development, and connections as well as other strategies through their "reading tracks".

5.  Book orders will be sent home this week.  Please return them by the required date.

Hopefully the cold weather will warm up soon.  Please remember to send necessary clothes for 3B students to go outside, even when it is chilly.  We may get out one of these days!

Have a great week!

Is a College Degree Worth it The Wrong Debate Continues

Is a College Degree Worth it The Wrong Debate Continues

-->
There are two dominant views concerning the value of a college degree currently circulating in American culture.  One view is that on average, people with college degrees make much more money over their lifetime than people without degrees.  The other view is that the over-production of college degrees has deflated their value, and we now have taxi drivers and baristas with PhDs.  I have often presented a third view, which is that a value of a college degree should not be equated with future earning power or job prospects, and instead of seeing higher education as a private good, we must see it as a public good.

The first problem with the idea that a college degree means higher earnings is that this correlation can have multiple causes.  We know that on average, students with wealthy parents and more social connections to high-paying jobs graduate from college at a higher rate.  Likewise, SAT scores are highly correlated with the wealth of the parents, and college rankings are highly correlated with SAT scores, and even financial aid is now often linked to SAT scores. The system as a whole thus reinforces class privilege, and so it may be that people who attain college degrees earn more because they start off with more and are given more opportunities and advantages as they move through the education and job systems.

On the other side of the coin, the over-production of college degrees can be directly related to the under-supply of good jobs.  What we are seeing in many different job markets is that due to the lack of unionization, the increase in automation, and the globalization of labor and consumption, employers are able to depress wages and benefits.  One interesting test case for this theory is in higher education itself where we have witnessed a significant decrease in “good” jobs.  In just a few decades, we have moved from a system where the majority of the teachers had full-time, tenure-track positions to a situation where the majority of the faculty have part-time, non-tenure-track positions.  During this period, enrollments have increased, so we cannot say that there is a decrease in the demand for people with PhDs.  Instead, universities and colleges have decided to de-professionalize the professoriate.  As I have pointed out before, one cause for this problem is that the same institutions that produce the PhD degree do not require a PhD to teach undergraduate students.

In other fields, this casualization of the labor force has been pushed by the use of technology to reduce compensation.  Due to the Web and the new media economy, professionals in journalism, entertainment, and other services have been replaced by citizens who are willing to work for little or nothing.  This reduction in earnings was once countered by the recognition that workers in a domestic economy must be paid enough to participate in the local consumer economy, but now in a globalized economy, there is always another person willing to consume our products.

What this analysis tells us is that we cannot expect higher education to fix our employment problems since so many of the labor issues are derived from the power of employers to reduce the compensation and benefits of their workers.  Just as the current funding model of higher education is rigged to reinforce class inequality, our failure to protect workers from destructive labor practices functions to enhance economic stratification.  When we throw high student debt into this mix, we see that our entire economic and social system is programmed against the future.    What we need is better labor laws and better employers.  Once all of the income gains stop going to the top 1%, we will see more good jobs, but education alone cannot fix this issue.

Is Getting Rid of Performance Reviews Really a Good Thing

Is Getting Rid of Performance Reviews Really a Good Thing

The Huffington Post reports today on a new study about employee performance reviews by CEB, a consulting firm that offers talent management solutions to its clients.   In recent years, some firms have chosen to do away with the traditional annual performance review.   Some good reasons exist for eliminating these reviews, as the process often does not deliver desired results.  CEB finds, however, that eliminating such review systems may do more harm than good.  Here is an excerpt from the CEB report of their findings:

What’s more, the improvements in measures of employee performance that companies expect actually fall because managers struggle to make and communicate performance and pay decisions without ratings. In fact, less than 5% of managers are able to effectively manage employees without ratings. CEB analysis shows that eliminating ratings leads to four unintended outcomes.
  • Manager conversation quality declines by 14% because managers struggle to explain to employees how they performed in the past and what steps to take to improve future performance.
  • Managers have more time, but time spent on informal conversations decreases by 10 hours because managers do not shift that extra time toward ongoing, informal performance conversations.
  • Top performers’ satisfaction with pay differentiation decreases by 8% because managers have trouble explaining how pay decisions are made and linked to individual contributions.
  • Employee engagement drops by 6% because managers are unable to do the very things that are proven to engage employees, such as set expectations for their, hold clear performance and development conversations, and provide appropriate rewards and recognition.
In sum, the theory of removing the annual review process is that more frequent, informal feedback could be more effective than an annual "event" at which managers employ a formal ratings system to evaluate and rank employees.   In reality, it appears that many managers simply do not provide sufficient feedback when formal annual review systems are eliminated.  Perhaps we should not be surprised by these findings.   Many managers would rather jump in the water off the Maine coast in January than deliver feedback to their subordinates!

Is There Only One Right Answer A Challenge to the Teaching of Math and Science in Higher Ed

Is There Only One Right Answer A Challenge to the Teaching of Math and Science in Higher Ed

Many current promoters of MOOCs and other distance education models argue that higher education can be taught in a much more efficient way in fields like computer science, math, biology, and chemistry. According to high-tech educators, the main reason why these important disciplines can be streamlined is that there is only one right answer to questions and tests, and so a computer can easily grade these courses.  On a most basic level, they claim that 2+2 will always equal 4, and thus, there is no need for creativity, critical thinking, or interactive discussions.

The problem with this logic is that it removes the STEM disciplines from any social, personal, or ethical context.  In other words, students learn that math and science are impersonal, value-free fields founded on established, unchallengeable truths.  While it is clear that students do need to learn basic formulas and concepts, all knowledge needs to be seen in its social and historical contexts.  In fact, not only do we want students to think critically about the information they learn inside and outside of their classes, but we also need to train scientists and engineers to be innovative and creative.  Moreover, with the increasing importance of issues like alternative energy, cloning, stem cell therapy, and climate change, science and math should be approached with ethical concerns front and center.

Purveyors of MOOCs like to say that online classes will not be any worse than the large lecture classes that dominate the undergraduate curriculum, and they have a point when they make this argument; however, we do not need a race to the bottom: what we need is to re-commit universities and colleges to spending resources on undergraduate instruction.  Whether our goal is to compete in the global high-tech economy or train future citizens and responsible adults, higher education cannot be focused on simply transmitting and testing simplified facts and calculations.  In fact, it is surprising that many of the most ardent promoters of MOOCs are themselves innovative computer scientists who think outside of the established box.

While China sends its students to American universities in order to build a creative class, it is ironic that the U.S. is seeking to dumb down its own curriculum. As I often tell my students, it is rare in life that you are confronted with one right answer or a simple multiple-choice test.  Reality is far too complex for the reductive model of education that is often tied to MOOCs and a reductive vision of the STEM disciplines.

Javadoc equivalent for Grails a necessity

Javadoc equivalent for Grails a necessity

Oh yeah! Graeme Rocher and Marc Palmer have done an excellent job creating the Reference Documentation for the Grails Framework for version 1.0-RC1 (check it out http://grails.org/doc/RC1/). This will be familiar to anyone that has referenced Javas API javadocs like I have for so many years.

This is an absolute necessity for Grails development IMO due to its dynamicity (I think I just made that up). Outside of checking out the source, yuck, how else would you know which options are available? This is another piece of the puzzle before the official release of Grails 1.0.

Here is what the reference documentation covers:
  • Grails Commands - detailed usage information for the grails commands like generate-all, test-app, etc.
  • Constraints - explains all the current constraints available to Domains like blank, maxSize, etc.
  • Controllers - shows all the information available for controllers
  • Domain Classes - shows all methods available to consumers of domain classes like save, validate, find*, etc.
  • Plugins - information available for plugins
  • Services - explains things like scope and transactional
  • Servlet API - typicaly servlet stuff like request and response
  • Tag Libraries - information available for tag libraries
  • Tags - tags you can use in your GSP and I am sure, but not certain, in your JSPs.

Ishqbaaz’s Nakuul Mehta is a fan of Shaheer Sheikh’s work in Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi

Ishqbaaz’s Nakuul Mehta is a fan of Shaheer Sheikh’s work in Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi

In a year when TV’s leading men have been loving and super supportive of their women, Nakuul Mehta’s Shivaay Singh Oberoi in Ishqbaaz has come like a sharp contradiction. The wedding track is the talk of the town. The actor won the Best Actor Award at AVTA 2016 and spoke to Bollywood Life about what makes Shivaay unique and special….

Did you expect the award at AVTA 2016?
To be honest and fair, the character and the show is a good one. It has been well-received by people. I take great pride in whatever I do. So, I was ‘not’ not expecting the honour.

From Shaheer Sheikh in KRPKAB to Vivian Dsena in Shakti, this has been an year for male actors. Who did you feel was your toughest competitor?
As a TV actor, you do not get time to consume your own work. There is hardly any time left to watch what your peers are doing. I used to wonder why film actors say it is tough to catch up on what others are doing but now I realise what they meant. When you are shooting for a show, you are totally into it with very little free time. I have seen bits of Shaheer’s Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi and it I feel it is a very good and realistic show. He has done a great job. Vivian Dsena is a dear friend. All are doing a good job and delivering their best, which is why they are loved.

(Also Read: Ishqbaaz: Anika to give a TIGHT SLAP to Shivaay)

Whom would you give credit to for Shivaay Singh Oberoi?
It is actually full credit to my writers and producers. The makers were willing to bet money on me to play this role when I played a diametrically opposite character in my last show, Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara. It took a lot of guts on their side. SSO is totally different from Nakuul. That is what I love about my role…the chance to do be someone who is just not me. I am absolutely loving it. While I do come with a pedigree in real life, I do not share any of SSO’s values and thoughts.

You come from Prithviraj Chauhan’s dynasty. Did you take any inspiration from your forefathers?
I did not consciously look into it. Yes, I do come from an amazingly illustrious background. The walls of my home are adorned with pictures of my forefathers. They fought all the wars. There is a lifesize portrait of my great-grandfather, which is 150 years old. When you see them in their military wear, the sense of royalty unknowningly seeps into you. I was also reading my dad’s novel Guns And Glories while shooting for Ishqbaaz, so maybe sub-consciously I got some reference points.

Shivaay is a total chauvinist. Did the character not bother you in this feminist wave on TV?
As an actor, you choose your own roles. I like to be unabashed. If he is a chauvinist, there is no point in going half way just to keep a few people happy. There are characters like Shivaay in society and as an actor you portray what you see around you. We want people to feel Anika’s pain. It would be selfish to alter the character just to obtain a middle path. We are not making a preachy show but people should and must have problems with someone like Shivay.
