Joda Time Auto Timestamping Issue on Grails 1 1 1

Joda Time Auto Timestamping Issue on Grails 1 1 1

Ive not upgraded most of my code to Grails 1.1.1 yet so I hadnt noticed this problem until it was brought to my attention by Manuel Vio on the grails-user mailing list.

I raised a bug a few days ago around the fact that GORM identifies Joda Time types (and presumably any non-default property type) as a one-to-one association. Up to now the only problem this caused me was that it means the Joda Time plugin has to do some slightly hacky tricks in the scaffolding templates to prevent crashes when Grails tries to render the properties as though they were associated domain instances only to find they have no id property. However, on Grails 1.1.1 the bug is causing a nasty failure on auto-timestamping.

Under Grails 1.1 you can use a Joda DateTime for an auto-timestamped fields:

DateTime dateCreated
DateTime lastUpdated

static mapping = {
dateCreated type: PersistentDateTime
lastUpdated type: PersistentDateTime
}

These behave exactly like the regular Date fields with those names, i.e. theyre set automatically on save and update. In Grails 1.1.1 the same class will fail on save with a GroovyRuntimeException Could not find matching constructor for: java.lang.Object(java.lang.Long).

There is a (somewhat strange) workaround - declare the timestamped fields as non-lazy!

DateTime dateCreated
DateTime lastUpdated

static mapping = {
dateCreated type: PersistentDateTime, lazy: false
lastUpdated type: PersistentDateTime, lazy: false
}

Digging into the Grails code a little I found that association properties have their getter wrapped in a lazy-loading proxy. Since GORM thinks Joda Time properties are associations, this happens to them. The auto-timestamping code initialises the properties using property.getType().newInstance(System.currentTimeMillis()). Unfortunately, because property is actually the lazy-load proxy rather than the real property property.getType() returns Object.

Its the most wonderful time of the year!

Its the most wonderful time of the year!

Its mid July and while the normal folks are busy planning trips to the lake and having BBQs we horror fanatics and monster kids are scouring store aisles waiting for that first bit of Halloween merchandise to rear its orange, ugly head.  The first sighting a grinning pumpkin means the cool, crisp Autumn air is soon to follow.  Aisles full of backpacks and brightly colored markers will get replaced with jack-o-lanterns and skeletons.  Its truly the best time to be a horror nut.

So what have I found so far?  Not a lot.  But what I have seen has been quality which makes me think that were in for a great Halloween season!

As July comes to an end you can expect more posts dedicated to further Halloween-related merchandise.  As Ive relocated to a new state this year Im realling looking forward to checking out what Albuquerque has to offer this season.

For further updates be sure to follow @Cannibalreviews on Instagram, Twitter, and Tumbler.  For those also located in the Southwest Im currently working on a facebook page that can bring like-minded individuals together to share news on upcoming local events and Halloween related activities.

Its Time! Student led Conferences!

Its Time! Student led Conferences!

Just a reminder that Tuesday and Thursday of this week are conference nights.  If you have not signed up yet, please call Linda at school as the site to do it online has been closed to parents as of last week.

Also remember that these conferences are student led, meaning your child will be leading the conferences with me listening in.  I will join the conference towards the end to share my thoughts as well.  If there is a conference going on in the classroom that is running late, please do NOT wait outside the room!  Come on in and your 3B child will start!  They know what to do and can start without me listening in. I have already discussed this with the students and they know not to wait.   We need to stay on time as many families have more than one conference to attend.  So please do not wait out in the hallway.  Come on in and get started!!!!

We have a lot of projects that students are just finishing up!  They are anxious to share what they have done with you personally before we post them on their student blog pages.

I look forward to seeing all of you either Tuesday or Thursday night!

Its February The month of Love Time to celebrate the Heart Truth

Its February The month of Love Time to celebrate the Heart Truth

Beginning with National Wear Red Day®—Friday, February 5, 2010—millions helped to spread the critical message that "Heart Disease Doesnt Care What You Wear—Its the #1 Killer of Women.®" The Red Dress®, the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness, was created by The Heart Truth®in 2002 to deliver an urgent wakeup call to American women. Everyone can participate in the national movement by wearing their favorite red dress, shirt, tie, or Red Dress Pin. For free information and resources to help you and your community celebrate National Wear Red Day, visit the National Wear Red Day toolkit.

On Thursday, February 11, 2010, The Heart Truth brought the Red Dress to life once again on the runway at New York Fashion Week with the debut of the Red Dress Collection 2010. This spectacular event reminds women of the need to protect their heart health and inspires them to take action. For the second year in a row, a selection of the designer dresses seen on the runway will be auctioned online in February through a partnership with Clothes Off Our Back. To bid on these Red Dresses this February, visit www.clothesoffourback.org.
Get Involved today: visit the Healthy Action Community, where you can find free tools and resources to help you protect your heart health and share The Heart Truth with others. Be sure to let others know about your event by submitting details to the Activity Registry.

I thought the above information important for all women everywhere to take notice of.  For those of you who are still lighting up a ciggie, you know who you are, this is the year to say quits and breathe easier.

For all my Canajun buddies, good luck to all the participants at the start of the Winter Olympics and keep us updated on the happenings, eh?  Ciao!!

Its time GWAR O WEEN!

Its time GWAR O WEEN!

If you havent had a chance to stop by Cannibal Reviews Facebook page, you should rectify that as soon as possible!  This Halloween season we are having a number of giveaways featuring a wide range items perfect for this time of the year!  Our latest contest is GWAR themed featuring an album signed by the ENTIRE band during their Lust in Space era.

This is a cool contest for a number of reasons; One, Its frickin GWAR.  Two, its signed by the entire band - unfortunately Dave Brockie and Cory Smoot are no longer with us.  Casey Orr has moved onto other projects making this a piece of GWAR history.  On top of all that Im also tossing in a bunch of cool little Halloween items in the box and filling it full of earth from my haunted basement (AKA Im shoving Dollar Tree moss in the box for added effect.)

The contest runs until October 5th, to enter all you have to do is like the Cannibal Reviews Facebook page and share this image and you will automatically get an entry into the giveaway!

Its that simple.  Ill be shipping worldwide meaning anyone can enter, its not just limited to the united states.  One entry per person, yada-yada-yada, you probably know the drill by now.

A winner will be announced the night of October 5th.

Its Time to Rock with Rock n Roll Legend RICK SPRINGFIELD

Its Time to Rock with Rock n Roll Legend RICK SPRINGFIELD

Sahara Aldridge with Rick Springfield
_____
"I have known Little Miss S since she was 5 and she is a bright spark in this weary world and this planet NEEDS her. Please join us at the Show Me Center, December 8th for a powerful show for an even more powerful cause".--Rick Springfield, Rock & Roll Legend
________________________________
(Excerpted from Michael Mannings blog post of Wednesday, November 22, 2006)

Unlike my previous BLOGs, Im going to share information to assist those of you who live "OUT OF STATE" who want to attend this "once in a lifetime" concert event. Also, I am also going to repeat information for those of you who live in and around Cincinnati, Ohio area who wish to join me on the custom Tour Bus I have leased--which is FREE, by the way. And the reason Im posting this everyone, is because I received word that a woman in California read my BLOG POSTS here and she responded by booking a flight from California to Missouri! I presume she is flying into Cape Girardeau Regional Airport (CGI) and the Show Me Center advised me that she also wants to meet me, which is a privilege. Now, I realize that not everyone of you can do this. Many of you are married with children and heavy responsibilities. But I know you care deeply. Theres still a way you can help and Ill share that here too in a moment.

I have leased a Tour Bus and assembled the components of this project to invite people who really love high octane Rock & Roll to join me. Many of you who are local have E-mailed me asking what local Radio and Television Stations they can tune in to listen and watch this story unfold. Ill also talk about how you can help even if you cant attend (and many of you live outside the US and want to help). So, let me just answer your FAQs straight away:

_____
Q: I LIVE OUTSIDE THE US BUT WANT TO HELP SAHARA WIN HER BATTLE WITH CANCER. HOW CAN I HELP?
_____
Answer: All donations may be sent to: US Bank, Sahara HOOPS Aldridge "Slam Dunk Cancer" Fund, 325 N. Kingshighway, Cape Girardeau, MO. 63701 USA.
_____
Q: CAN I SEND A BRIEF "HELLO" AND A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT TO SAHARA?
_____
Answer: You bet! Go to Sahara Aldridges website at: http://www.saharaaldridge.blogspot.com/. Remember folks, that you are speaking to a 12 year old girl--so rather than get heavy--a simple word of encouragement is preferable and would be really cool!
_____
Q: I WANT TO ATTEND THIS AWESOME ROCK CONCERT BY RICK SPRINGFIELD, BUT I LIVE OUT OF STATE. HOW CAN I GET A TICKET AND DIRECTIONS FOR LAND OR AIR TRAVEL?
_____
Answer: Very Cool! First, get your ticket by contacting Ticketmaster by phone at (573) 651-5000. The Ticket levels are $25 & $35 and Premium Tickets at $200 include a Special Artists Reception with Rick Springfield. NOTE: "Out of State" people can also go online at: http://www.showmecenter.biz/ to book tickets. Once you are on the Show-Me Center website, click on Directions for auto travel from Illinois, Kentucky or Missouri. If you are flying to the event, I suggest that you contact airlines who service your city or town for assistance to Cape Girardeau Regional Airport (CGI).
_____
Q: TELL ME HOW TO BOOK MY HOTEL ROOM?
_____
Answer: If you are "Out of State", just call the DRURY LODGE at (573) 334-7151 and mention the Code Word: "SHOW ME" for a $69 plus tax special discounted room rate. A free breakfast buffet is available as well.
_____
Q: IM IN AND AROUND THE CINCINNATI AREA. I WANT TO GET A TICKET AND RESERVE A SEAT ON THAT GROOVY TOUR BUS THAT IS FREE. TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO! RICK SPRINGFIELD IS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!
_____
Answer: You are awesome too! From our area, you need to call Ticketmaster at (573) 651-5000 and use the code name : "BUS" and mention The Rick Springfield Benefit Concert for Sahara Aldridge in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. We have 56 seats reserved in Section 103 Rows J-M. Tickets are $25 and $35. The Premium Artist Reception with Rick is $200. So theres a ticket to fit any budget! Next, if you are going on the Tour Bus, the way to book your DRURY LODGE room at the $69 plus tax discounted rate is slightly different from the "Out of State" people. Go online at www.druryhotels.com and Click On: "Book It Fast", Use this code: 262455 . Then proceed to book your room. Once you have a Confirmation Number, Email me at: michaelmanninginfo@GMail.com and provide me with the following: Your full name, Daytime and Evening Phone Number with Area Code, and your Hotel Confirmation Number. Remember people, WE STILL HAVE SEATS AVAILABLE! Dont get left behind! Act Now!!!. I will also be accepting "Stand-By" names for those who are otherwise willing to follow our bus by car. In the event that we have a "No Show", I will fill that seat with a "Stand By" person.

_____
Q: WHERE DO WE MEET THE BUS IN CINCINNATI ONCE WE ARE BOOKED?
_____
Answer: At 8:30 A.M. on Thursday, December 7th, 2006 our Tour Bus will pull up in front of The Westin Hotel located directly across the street from the newly-renovated Fountain Square in the center of downtown Cincinnati at 5th & Vine Streets! Macys department store is catty-corner across the street (with the HUGE new Jumbo Screen TV on their roof). Parking is available at the Northern Fountain Square Garage on Vine Street, or at the 5th and Race Street Open Lot (next to the Millennium Hotel). I will endeavor to secure free parking. This is still underway. I will be carrying Mayor Mallorys Proclamation on board designating December 8, 2006 as "SAHARA ALDRIDGE DAY" in The City of Cincinnati! Isnt that a blast? We will depart promptly at 9:00 A.M. for Cape Girardeau, Missouri and arrive at 4:00 P.M. where Channel 12 Television will be awaiting our arrival at the DRURY LODGE to interview us! We will overnight at the hotel, then enjoy an Ultra-Groovy Breakfast Buffet the morning of the concert! The concert begins at 7:30 P.M. Those who have Premium Gold tickets to enjoy an Artist Reception with Rick Springfield will be driven to the meeting site by our Tour Bus. Our meeting point after the concert will be the bus so we can "overnight" back to Cincinnati. This is a Tour bus and the seats recline. "Overnighting" tours are common. The bus has three flat screen TVs, DVD and CD players and a restroom. Even our Driver is Groovy! Lakefront Lines is the largest Tour Bus operator in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois. They have received the highest awards of safety and excellence from both The Department of Transportation and The Department of Defense. Our Tour bus is new. We will Rock!
_____
Q: I HAVENT SEEN ANY OF THE CINCINNATI TELEVISION STATIONS COVER THIS STORY SO FAR? AND SECONDLY, IS THERE A RADIO STATION THAT I SHOULD STAY TUNED TO?
_____
Answer: YES! Tune in Radio Station WGRR 103.5 FM, Winner of "Adult Contemporary Station of the Year". This is where you will find interviews with Rick and all information related to the show and this Cincinnati-based project in the days ahead! WGRR 103.5 FM is THE "Official Radio Station" for "The Cincinnati Sahara Aldridge Express" Tour Bus Trip to The Rick Springfield Benefit Concert for Sahara.
_____
This is truly a unique Cincinnati story. The Cincinnati Police will be Escorting our bus out of the city limits as a "tip of the hat" to Sahara for making so much phenomenal progress! I continue to work on tying up some smaller details here while I remain available to Media.
_____
All of your Prayers, Good Wishes, E-mails, Mediations, Good Vibes sent through the Universe and Blogosphere are being felt and appreciated. Keep it up! And dont forget to say a brief hello to Sahara for a smile and encouragement!

All proceeds from ticket sales after expenses are paid will go to benefit Sahara and her family. Rick Springfield is playing the concert for free. For more information on the concert, visit www.showmecenter.biz or Michael Manning at: www.michaelmanning.tv.

Just In Time for Monday

Just In Time for Monday

Just in case you didnt have enough activities for Presidents Day, heres one more. Click HERE or the book cover for a free online version of the book, Arthur Meets the President. In the book Arthur visits several national landmarks. Teaching national landmarks is in our state standards, so I thought I would work that into Mondays lesson. Click HERE or the picture for a National Landmark Foldable Booklet. Arthur visits each of these places in the book. Ive included two versions. One with the names and one without. You could have the kids find one fact about each or just write in the name of the landmark. The map on the last page can be used to trace Arthurs journey through Washington DC.

Heres a cute video,too.

Good luck as you continue to  create magic in your classroom!

It’s Limerick time! xxx

It’s Limerick time! xxx

Hi there.
Thanks for popping in!
It’s a winter wonderland here on theAshdown Forest.
Very, very beautiful.

Friday’s blog a private peek, right?
Well, when I was younger I used to live in Bavaria, Germany,
and boy! Did we get snow!
The Germans are so prepared for it though!
There would come a point when the snow got so high that there would be a SCHNEEKETTEN (say Schnaykettn. Perfect) alert,
and out would come all the snow chains for the tyres,
and on we would trundle.

Over here, we get 3 inches, and the country grinds to a halt!
E V E R Y  Y E A R.
But hey ho. This too shall pass. It always does.
I just hope the poor people out in the cold can get into the warm.

Taking the afternoon off to regroup
and try and remember who I am!
I’ve given up tea and coffee, because it was making me even more anxious than I already am!!!
Peppermint is a lovely tea. Caffeine-free, so that’ll do.
Any other caffeine-free suggestions? And don’t say Vodka!
Not an option here!

What a whirlwind this month is.
This time last year we had just got back from a week
in California at the CHA. So it was just as mental then too.

And this was the year before!

Phones, Ipads. Glamorous ? NOT!!!

If you always does what you always did,
you’ll always get what you always got...

Are we attending the CHA this year? Nope.

Looking out over the white garden,
I was thinking...
 it is time for a Limerick!

Oh we do love a limerick, don’t we?!

I shall give you the first 2 lines,
which you can then copy and paste below, and finish the limerick.
I’m in need of a good laugh, and I imagine you are too.

A winner will be picked on Sunday,
to win a £20 Clarity Gift Voucher.

Sound good?

Right. Here goes....

There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow....
la la la la la
la la la la la
la la la la la la la la.

I can already hear the responses !!!!

Be safe.
If it’s icy, don’t go out unless you absolutely have to.
I absolutely have to.

Love & Hugs,
Barb
xx

Its Time to Play the Music

Im so happy to be able to show you all my contribution to "The Lovers, the Dreamers, and Me", the Jim Henson Tribute show that opens tonight at Gallery Nucleus. My piece is titled "Its Time to Light the Lights", and I thought it would be fun to show Bunson and Beaker getting into some trouble. Poor Beaker never seems to benefit from Bunsons experiments.

Here is some more information about the show:

Jim Hensons accomplishments have left a widespread and enduring impression on generations of admirers since his first endeavors in the late 1950s. From his iconic and colorful cast on Sesame Street to the groundbreaking fantasy Dark Crystal, Hensons imagination and ingenuity have ignited a path that many others have since followed.

Timed with the release of Disneys The Muppets motion picture and news on a forthcoming Henson biopic, Nucleus has invited more than 30 artists to pay homage to this universally beloved visionary whose inspiring concepts and characters have impacted our culture in a monumental way. The collection will showcase a variety of mediums from a roster of professionals who are also genuine fans.

Its time for a GIVEAWAY!!!

Its time for a GIVEAWAY!!!

***Thank you to everybody who entered! The giveaway is now closed, and Ill be drawing a winner in the next day or two. Thanks for all your input on my Etsy shop, for all the new subscribers, and new followers!! I look forward to getting to know all of you! Check back on June 2nd to find out who won..... will it be you?***

**************************************************

Last time I did a giveaway on my blog was in celebration of my one year Etsy-versary. It was so much fun that I just have to do it again! Not only have I just passed the 200th sale mark, but tomorrow is my birthday, and Sew, Mama, Sew! is having their annual May Giveaway Day! I think its meant to be!

First of all, if youve found my blog through Sew, Mama, Sew!, welcome!!! Thanks so much for stopping bye. If youre here because youre one of my readers, I highly encourage you to click *here* for a list of hundreds of other blogs that are also doing a giveaway right now. Spend a little while blog hopping, its lots of fun!
Now, on to the good part.

Here is what you could win:

~One ribbon blankie, one pair of baby booties, and one pair of Sock Monkey socks~

I made these especially for you! First is a ribbon blankie, measuring about 8"x8":

There are 20 tags securely sewn in, with many different textures to keep baby busy! The top is Moda Sock Monkey print, and the back is ultra soft smooth red minky. Next is a coordinating set of
baby booties:

I have been wanting to try making some for the longest time, and this was the perfect opportunity! They are also made from the Moda Sock Monkey print, with thick soft red fleece on the inside. So cozy! Im not sure about the size, but Im guessing they would fit somewhere between 6-12 months old. The sole is about 4.5" long. Last but not least is one pair of original Rockford Red Heel
sock monkey socks:

These come with directions, so you can make your own sock monkey to go with the blankie and the booties. All you will need is a sewing machine, stuffing, and a needle and thread. Its a great project for beginners too!

There are a few ways to win.
Feel free to do one or all three.
Just make sure to leave a separate
comment for each way you enter.

(Please only do each thing one time,
for a maximum of three total entries).

1. Go to my Etsy shop, Treasures Under the Willow Tree, and find your favorite item. Come back here and leave me a comment, telling me why you like that item! You could also give me a suggestion for something else youd like to see in my shop!

2. Subscribe to my feed!

3. Follow my blog! The link is in the righthand column, a little ways down the page.

*Please remember to leave your blog link or email address so I can contact you if you win!*

I will ship your prize anywhere! The contest will end at 10pm, Sunday, May 31st. Ill throw all the entries in a bag, shake it up really well, and let Kade draw one out. Ill notify the winner and post it here by Tuesday, June 2nd.

Good luck, and have fun!!!

Joda Time and Grails Auto Timestamping

Joda Time and Grails Auto Timestamping

The Joda-Time Plugin docs state that Grails auto-timestamping works with Joda-Time properties which is the case. However, when testing it can be useful to take advantage of Joda Times DateTimeUtils class to mock the current time. This enables you to have new DateTime objects, for example, use a predictable timestamp. Unfortunately it doesnt play nicely with Grails auto-timestamping which under the covers uses System.currentTimeMillis(). There are a couple of solutions to this. You can disable the auto-timestamping and define your own beforeInsert event which enables you to use DateTimeUtils.setCurrentMillisFixed. For example:

static mapping = {
autoTimestamp false
}

def beforeInsert = {
dateCreated = new DateTime()
}

The other option would be to mock out the value returned by System.currentTimeMillis(). This has the advantage of meaning you dont have to add code to your domain class to enable tests to work, but on the other hand its all to easy to have such meta class modifications leak from test to test by not being torn down properly.

On a related note the next release of the Joda-Time plugin will bind additional methods to DateTimeUtils to scope mocking of the current timestamp, for example:

DateTimeUtils.withCurrentMillisFixed(aLong) {
// do some stuff that requires a mocked current time
}

No more forgetting to call DateTimeUtils.setCurrentMillisSystem() in your tearDown method!

It Is Secret Recipe Club Time!

It Is Secret Recipe Club Time!

Recently I joined a fun cooking group online called, The Secret Recipe Club.  Oh. My. Goodness what fun! I was assigned a LOVELY blog and from that blog I got to choose a recipe to make and then share with all of you.  But I couldnt reveal the blog or the recipe until today!  So without any further waiting my secret recipe for today is, Mini Pumpkin Muffins....

.... from the wonderful blog, Everyday Sisters. :-)

Not only did I enjoy this recipe (as I am sure you guys will too) but I fell head over heels in love with this blog!  Four (yes, FOUR...two of which are identical twins and all four of which are just lovely inside and out -  I can tell by their sweet smiles.) sisters have created and contribute to Everyday Sisters. All of them are just lovely - I feel like I know them personally now that I have been following them for the past month.  I felt honored to get to know them via their blog.  I love the variety of recipes that they offer such as Bistro Style Pasta Neapolitano (super yum looking and simple to throw together), White Zinfandel Sangria (one of my all time favorite kinds of drinks...the recipe lots so GOOD!) and Blueberry Cheesecake (which won an award!).  Yup, I did a lot of drooling as I looked through their blog. So many yummy recipes!! :-)

I loved these Mini Pumpkin Muffins! These little gems only required 5 ingredients - simple, yummy and fun.  Nothing better than that. Amen! And because they were so yummy and simple to make I made a batch to send to my oldest daughters Halloween party at school today. I think all the kiddos will love them!

Mini Pumpkin Muffins
(recipe from Everyday Sisters)

Ingredients:
1 box yellow cake mix
1 can (15 oz.) pumpkin (NOT pie filling)
3 eggs
1/3 cup oil (I used canola)
sunflower seeds - optional - (I used chocolate covered sunflower seeds as that is what I had on hand... which worked out pretty well!)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease mini muffin tins or line with cupcake liners.
2. In a large bowl combine all ingredients except for sunflower seeds. Mix until well combined.
3. Stir into batter sunflower seeds or you can wait until muffin batter has been scooped into tins.
4. Scoop batter into muffin tins.  I did so with my small scoop from Pampered Chef.

5. Bake for 11-13 minutes.  Cool for a couple of minutes in pan and then remove to serve and enjoy.

YUM!

A special thank you to Ellen, Nanci, Karen and Susan from Everyday Sisters for being part of the Secret Recipe Club so that I could have you as my first Secret Recipe Club blog.  Also, Id like to thank Amanda who created this cooking club and Tami for hostessing my group.  I cant wait to find out which blog I get for the month of November!

Happy Mini Pumpkin Muffin Baking!
