– Toh final hai?
Kabhi I love you nahi bolna hai, right?
– Right!
– Cool!

– Waise ‘never say I love you’ ko
   French mein kaise bolte hain
– Ne dis jamais je t’aime
– Ne dis jamais je t’aime, aa ha..
   it’s so sexy ya

Ne dis jamais je t’aime je t’aime
Ne dis jamais je t’aime
Kehna na yaar pyaar hai
Ne dis jamais je t’aime

Phir dil niklega haathon se
Karle khud pe reham
Neendein phislengi raaton se
Karle khud pe reham

Ne dis jamais je t’aime je t’aime
Ne dis jamais je t’aime
Kehna na yaar pyaar hai
Ne dis jamais je t’aime

Dard mein royega tu
Yaar bhi khoyega tu
Kehna na
Keh dena na

Muft mein kaanton ki sej pe soyega
Tu kehna na
Keh dena na

Saansein tham lengi saanson mein
Tujhko meri kasam
Dhaage uljhenge dhaagon se
Karle khud pe reham

Ne dis jamais je t’aime je t’aime
Ne dis jamais je t’aime
Kehna na yaar pyaar hai
Ne dis jamais je t’aime

Mudke na dekhna wahan
Jo chhod di gali
Phir saamne bhi aaye toh
Tu mod de gali

Ne dis jamais je t’aime je t’aime
Ne dis jamais je t’aime
Kehna na yaar pyaar hai
Ne dis jamais je t’aime

Is That You

Is That You

Oh? Hi!

Hey! Hiya! Hello.

Hows life? Alright?

Me? Yeah, yeah. Fine. Good. Good!

You? You alright? Havent seen you in, no. Yeah, ages. God.

Ive just been busy, you know? Still, probably my fault.

Um, still in Manchester. No, not gone on X-Factor yet, no, ha ha, um, LOL.

Oh God. This format is not sustainable but, honestly, I have no idea how on earth to write a Returning To Blogging post without cavorting recklessly into some classic blogging trap or other (e.g. wondering rather desperately whether Anyone Is Out There? and if so whether and how much theyve missed me). I would quite like to neatly summarize my life as it has been in the last few months but am incapable of doing anything neatly, as demonstrated by my fringe after I whimsically attacked it with the kitchen scissors some weeks back. (Ironically, that is a pretty neat example.)

I suppose I can say the following things:

1. Manchester. I am still living in it. It is still raining on me. As it turns out, fairly excellently: Rain + Fringe = Much Shitter Fringe.

2. Music. I am still doing it, singing and writing and the like. I like to think the fringe adds a institution-ish air to my latest efforts. This is an delusion I am fighting to maintain.

3. Men. I am still living with Ben, although I have had to insist that he wears a blindfold until the fringe grows out. I do not consider this to be unreasonable.

4. Money. I work in a café and do singing workshops in schools. Both are quite fun. I am a better workshop leader than I am a barista, but maybe I will combine the two and make la-la-lattes or cappuccin-ooooohs. (The fringe does not really come into this one much.)

I want to start blogging again but I dont know how. Im pretty sure that the best way is not to blurt out a few poorly-chosen, unfunny sentences that barely make any sense, but this is the route I have decided upon and I am sticking with it.

More soon, for sure.

Description

Jayne Rylon - Bound For You: Men In Blue 06

Ben has lived through hell. He only survived captivity and torture by the brutes who’d been attempting to develop Sex Offender, a potent aphrodisiac used as a date rape drug, because of the guy he met—and fell in lust with—in the drug lord’s dungeons. Ryan became Ben’s roommate after they escaped. His nearness is constantly tempting Ben to force Ryan to submit to his dark desires. Disgusted by how similar that makes him to their captors, he’s managed to hold off so far. How long can he keep his cravings for Ryan’s sexy body at bay? On top of that, they both seem to be falling for the same woman. If Ben has reservations about unleashing his sexual appetites on Ryan then that goes double for Shari, who is entirely too sweet and inexperienced for either of them. Or so Ben thinks. When Shari teams up with Ryan to change Ben’s mind, it seems like Ben might consider turning their three-way fling into something serious. Until a threat to Ben’s niece reminds them that it’s not always possible to keep those you love safe. After losing his sister in the Sex Offender scandal, Ben might never be ready to take that risk again. None of them could have realized they were bound for something greater than a traditional partner in life, but Shari and Ryan are sure the three of them will benefit from the love of not one, but two, strong, giving soul mates who can help them leave the darkness of their past behind. Will they be able to convince Ben that living fully is better than living cautiously?

Its good for you!!! Spinach Cheese and Pasta Dish

Its good for you!!! Spinach Cheese and Pasta Dish

Not only is this dish good for you, it is an easy "Week Night Meal" too!  Good for you and easy peasy to make........Wonderful!  And the fun part about this dish is that there are ?crispy French Fried Onions it in!- SUPER YUM!  It is so much fun for me to find a recipe that has an unexpected ingredient mixed into it.  Who wouldve guessed that French Fried Onions would be part of this recipe??  Yes, to the spinach, pasta and cheese (the title kind of gives it away....) but French Fried Onions?!?  Okay, enough of my own personal happiness with this recipe. Time for ME to share the recipe and for YOU to be the judge if this pasta dish makes YOU happy! :-)

Baked Spaghetti with Spinach and Cheese
(recipe from a delicious blog....Cassie Craves)

Ingredients:

4 oz. thin spaghetti or angel hair - broken into 2-inch pieces

1 egg

2 cups (16 oz.) sour cream

1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

1/4 tsp garlic powder

salt and pepper to taste

2 cups shredded monterey jack cheese (or cheese of choice)

1 package (10 oz.) frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well drained

1 can (2.8 oz.) french-fried onions, divided

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.   Cook spaghetti in salted water according to package directions.   Drain.

2. While pasta cooks, beat egg (as you can see I got so excited for this recipe that I just combined all ingredients instead of beating egg before adding in the other ingredients....worked out fine) in a medium bowl.  Add sour cream, parm cheese, garlic powder and salt and pepper to taste.....

3.  Add cooked and drained noodles to sour cream/egg mixture along with cheese, spinach and 1/2 of the fried onions....

Stir well all together.  Pour mixture into a well greased 2 quart baking dish.

4. Sprinkle remaining fried onions on top of noodles....

....and then cover with tin foil. Bake for 30 minutes then removed tin foil and continue baking for another 5-6 minutes or until onions are nice and golden brown.

For those of you that like/need to have a meat included on your dinner menu just add a nice grilled piece of chicken along side this dish and viola youve got your *protein, veggie and starch all at once! *Call me crazy but when I serve a dish for dinner if it has cheese in it of some form or another I consider it the "protein" of the dinner.

Enjoy!

Happy Baked Spaghetti with Spinach and Cheese Baking!

It depends on how you measure it

It depends on how you measure it

I always thought that cooking is simple as long as you have a reliable recipe. Over the years I learned to trust some of the newspaper food columnists, while taking with a grain of salt my kids’ class cookbooks because some words fade during the kids’ mail transit and Xeroxing.

Once you have a good recipe there is usually no one to blame for a bad outcome other than yourself. Well, occasionally you can tell that the eggs were too big or the stove is new. My eccentric grandaunt used to prohibit us from entering the kitchen during baking and blame us for disturbing the cake’s gestation period if it didn’t rise. But there is really not much more. One cup of flour is one cup of flour anywhere in the world, one tablespoon of butter is one tablespoon of butter. Or is it?

This week’s article in the New York Times surprises us by suggesting that it is not. It refers to an experiment when ten different people were asked to scoop 1 cup of flour and pour it into a bowl. The weight of flour in the individual bowls varied between 4 and 6 ounces depending on the strength and technique of scooping used by each participant. This meant that some of these people may be making a cake with 1.5 times as much flour as others.

What else can we use instead of the traditional and universal cup and spoon volume measures? The weight (mass), says the article advocating for simple kitchen scales. Note that weight is equal mass as long as we cook on earth.

Image by jamieanne, distributed under CCL.

Let’s recollect some math and physics:

Mass = Volume x Density

If the mass of 1 cup of flour in the bowls varied from 4 to 6 ounces, it means that the density is to blame. Faster scooping, scooping up vs down techniques, different storage, type of flour, shape of the cup – all of them can influence the density of the flour. To get the same amount in your recipe rely on mass.

The difference may be even more drastic when dealing with grated cheese. According to the article “the heavier shavings of a box grater can fill a cup with twice as much cheese as” “billowy ribbons of machine-shaved cheese.”

So, get yourself a kitchen scale for the next holidays. Use mass-based recipe source and you will:

  1. Get consistent recipe-matching results every time.
  2. Easily double or halve the recipe.
  3. Have less stuff to clean. You can use only one mixing bowl by slowly adding ingredients into it directly from the containers and zeroing weight on the scale after each addition.

What about your old favorite volume-based recipes? One cup of oil in moms sweet corn bread, one cup of honey in the Rosh haShana cake. Should you just convert them to mass?  This Pyrex measuring cup clearly marks 1 cup volume as 8 oz mass.

Remember the formula:
Mass = Volume x Density

For water measurements: 8 oz = 1 cup x Water Density
Oil, melted chocolate and honey are obviously denser than water. Higher density gives higher mass: around 10 oz for one cup of oil, and 12 oz for one cup of honey. So, beware of the Pyrex cup.

It is just you now in the kitchen with your scale and math.

It’s Monday What Are You Reading

It’s Monday What Are You Reading

I’m linking up for the first time with a great reading linky, It’s Monday What Are You Reading, hosted by Shelia at Book Journey and Jen and Kellee at Teach Mentor Texts.

The reason I decided to move from 2nd to 5th was ultimately decided by books.  As I thought about how big 5th graders are compared to 2nd graders…and all the attitude they might bring in their bigger selves…I suddenly had an epiphany…with bigger bodies comes bigger reading skills – well maybe that’s not a hard fast rule, but in elementary school I think it makes sense!

Reading...essentially my favorite sport!  Don’t get me wrong some of my little second graders were great readers.  But no matter what kind of reader you are as a second grader, well…you’re no fifth grader.  So, my love of reading and desire to teach rich literature at a higher level I accepted the position!

I’ve since checked out about 40+ books from the library.  I’ve always read a lot of YA literature.  But, I haven’t been keeping up.  Plus, a lot of the YA literature I read is geared more towards high school or middle school readers…so I’ve been reading.
Here are some pictures of this – you can’t read all the titles but you can get a sense of “she’s compulsively checking books out of the library…and may not be in complete control”.

13454334010251345433557190

I try to get the same amount of books in English and in Spanish because I will need to make sure to read and provide my students with equal opportunities to read authentic literature in both languages – no easy task my friends!

Here is what I’ve officially read or am reading most recently:
Igniting a Passion for Reading: Successful Strategies for Building Lifetime Readers Que Locura Por La Lectura / Wild About Books
Shipwreck (Island, #1)FrindleInside Out & Back Again
The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1)The Dreamer

1.  Steven Layne’s “Igniting a Passion for Reading”.  This is not a book I will be reading to my students, rather it’s a professional development read.  I am halfway through and am convinced Steven Layne and I are teaching soul mates.  Everything he says or recommends I’ve either done in one – but less purposefully, or have contemplated.  One thing he recommends is for teachers to focus their “personal for pleasure” reading on books that fit the age group they are teaching.  I haven’t been doing very good at this…so teacher vow: “I solemnly swear to read MOSTLY YA lit this year” (except for during my commute when I listen to books).  I highly recommend this book if you are looking for ideas for reading or are looking to be inspired!

2.  Judy Sierra’s “Que locura por la lectura” which also comes in English “Crazy About Reading”.  This is a book that is great for almost any grade level.  It’s well written and clever.  Older kids will appreciate they lyricism and wit of the text.  I’m looking forward to using this to set the tone in my classroom – Reading is AMAZING!

3.  Gordon Zorman’s “The Island”.  This was my first read by this prolific author.  It was a little slow to start but I’m a sucker for anything that is a series!  I love following characters indefinitely.  I think this will be a great read for 5th graders – they will have to “freshen up” on their nautical vocabulary though!

4. Andrew Clements’ Frindle.  I LOVED this book.  The characters were all likable and the school setting didn’t feel contrived at completely out of touch the way some do.  This is another read I hope to share with my students this year.

5.  Thanhha Lai’s “Inside Out & Back Again”.  I’m about a quarter through this book.  This is an interesting read about a young girl in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.  It is written from her perspective in verse.  This isn’t a book I would normally pick up, as I prefer prose, but it is well done.  I’m amazed at how much of her spirit, wit and will come through this writing style – more so than in your average novel!

6.  Julie Kagawa’s “The Immortal Rules”.  The first in a trilogy – which means it leaves the reader desperate for the second book.  Typical!  After Twilight I haven’t really read any vampire books, but this one was more “The Passage” meets “Hunger Games”.  I enjoyed it, and found the writing to be well done and the characters interesting.  I’m curious to see how the story continues.  I do not think I’ll be sharing this one with my fifth graders.  :)

7.  Pam Muñoz Ryan’s “The Dreamer”.  I’m actually reading the Spanish version “El soñador”.  A good friend of mine did not enjoy the English version, but so far I’m enjoying the Spanish version.  This story is about Pablo Neruda a famous Chilean poet.  I’m only part way through but is following him through his childhood.  The books is written in a mixture of prose, verse and stream of consciousness all from Neruda’s p.o.v.  I do not know that this would be a great read aloud as a whole, but there are many brilliant sections with beautiful language for teaching visualizations, sensory language and figurative language.  Also, if you ever want a peek into the mind of someone who is brilliant/incredibly easily distracted this book does it! Anything by Pam Muñoz Ryan is bound to be good in my opinion.

Do you have any recommendations for 5th grade?  I’m making near daily library trips, so recommendations are BIENVENIDOS!

Come “friend” me on Goodreads if you’re a YA reader too!
my read shelf:
Lauras book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
Happy Reading!

Is It Margaret You Mourn For

Is It Margaret You Mourn For

Margaret (2011) / US / Out on DVD now / Written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan / Starring Anna Paquin, J. Smith-Cameron, Mark Ruffalo, Jeannie Berlin, Jean Reno, Allison Janney, Kieran Culkin, Matt Damon, Matthew Broderick / 178 mins

Some movies are just damn unlucky. Margaret happens to be one of those. By now, you should all know the story - the film was made around seven years ago, but was stuck in production because the producers wouldnt allow Kenneth Lonergans passion project exceed 150 minutes. Lonergan insisted that it couldnt be that short, which eventuated in a couple of lawsuits, along with the film being shelved. Martin Scorsese and his trusty editor Thelma Schoonmaker came along and cut the film down to 150 minutes, which Lonergan approved of, and the film was on its way to a limited release in the US at the end of last year. Screeners were sent out to the Academy voters, but to no avail - Margaret passed without too much attention, trickled its way into international distributors laps, and wound up on DVD, complete with the three hour extended cut. Which is what I watched, so in a way, I was kinda seeing Kenneth Lonergans passion project just as he intended for it to be. But even then, it felt like this wasnt the masterpiece he wanted it to be - whether that be because his ideas were never fully realised, or three hours just wasnt enough to say everything that he wanted to say.

Should we be nice to Margaret because it has been on the shelf for so long? Should we take pity on Longergans efforts? No way. Margaret has far too many flaws to count, but it is still a fantastic film. The plot doesnt exactly scream three hours of footage, either. It follows the life of Lisa Cohen (Anna Paquin), a 17 year old who witnesses a bus accident which kills a woman (Allison Janney) - and she believes she was part of the cause of it, as she thinks she was distracting the driver of the bus (Mark Ruffalo). This strain of plot doesnt exactly stretch itself over the three hours. Instead, it manifests itself into the dramas of Lisas life, as she tries to grow up and learn from the experience, which is sometimes just a little too much for her 17 year old head to carry. Which is when the film becomes a coming-of-age drama, and to be honest, as a person who is the same age as the protagonist, this film was just about perfect.

The film is an absolute mess, but that somehow works to its advantage. That is probably because the film explores the tropes of being a teenager, and being a teenager is always an absolute mess. Lisa is an interesting character, who is impulsive, confused, headstrong...and yeah, sometimes impossibly annoying. But theres some interesting beauty within her. This comes from the fact that she doesnt move on from the accident that most people would have walked away from, creating an existential crisis that barely anyone could understand, but I could. Everything that happens to her rang surprisingly true in the strangest of ways. Her coming-of-age story wasnt sugar coated with those "teenage dream" days that Katy Perry believes in. Her life isnt particularly bad, but this movie kinda summed up my life, in all its twisted, angsty glory. Then again, Im a little more lenient to looking on the bright side of life than Lisa is.

Lisa is a difficult character, prone to random (wordy) outbursts at everyone in anyone, and is far from the most consistent person on Earth. It takes a special talent to bring life to someone who is so confused in hers, and Anna Paquin is more than capable of that. It was kinda strange seeing her playing someone so young when Im used to seeing her as Sookie Stackhouse on True Blood, but all those years ago, she gave us a wonderful performance - which is one of the best Ive ever seen. Shes part of the reason why this doesnt delve into Katy Perry territory in all its airbrushed nature. Paquin makes Lisa a completely normal teenager, which is what many early 20 year old actors seem to forget how to do. Theyd rather exaggerate everything, but Paquin keeps it all tightly wound and down to Earth. It is a shame that this film wasnt more noticed around Oscar time, because Paquins performance was better than Meryl Streeps prosthetics mimicry. Then again, this is exactly the kind of performance that the Academy likes to dismiss. Some people just dont realise what a feat it is to appear as a real human being on film, sometimes.

Backing Anna Paquins tour de force is a round-table of actors that act that crap out of their characters, even if they get wavering amounts of screen time. Matt Damon and Matthew Broderick turn up off and on as school teachers, the former being Lisas wee crush and the latter just, well, popping up. Mark Ruffalo gets a stunningly short amount of screen time as the bus driver that causes this big mess, but in the one scene where hes given a whole lot to do, he is fantastic. So is Rosemarie DeWitt, who plays his wife. J. Smith-Cameron is fantastic as Lisas actress mother, Joan, who goes through some existential crises of her own. I kinda felt like her storyline that follows her love affair with Jean Reno was a little bit unimportant - but then again, thats not the only time it occurs in this film. Kieran Culkin is pretty good, as is Allison Janney in her extremely small role. Jeannie Berlin is probably the standout, as the woman who helps Lisa try and get to the bottom of this bus accident. Some of these characters dont stay around long, some of them stay around too long - but thats the beauty of it: these people arent really forced into the film, they just come and go. It is all a big party for Lisa, really, and that party just happens to go for three hours.

I cannot stress enough how flawed and choppy Margaret is, but this isnt the kind of film that I can deem as "bad" or "The Room". If Margaret survives on anything, it survives on the ambition. Kenneth Lonergans ambition bleeds through every word, and I admire how he managed to stick with his project for so long. The fact that I had to stick with his project for a little longer than I wanted to wasnt really a problem - when ambition shines through like that, those three hours didnt seem to matter one bit.

ITs malignant narcissism and what you can do to rise above the noise

ITs malignant narcissism and what you can do to rise above the noise

IT department optimism does not translate into IT department budget. Thats what Jonathan Feldman wrote about in this Information Week piece. Their study provides lots of interesting insight into how many working in IT see things compared to, well, the rest of the business. Im not surprised.

While were on the subject, Ive recorded a video on ITs role in fixing this problem and wrote a new piece for TechTargets SearchWinIT.com site on why understanding management gets your IT department what it needs.

If youre going to move ahead - heck, even just survive - in IT, its critical to understand how the desire for gain or fear of loss are at the basis of every "sale" you make. Stop thinking of yourself as an IT person and, instead, as a business professional whos helping the business move forward and accomplish its goals by leveraging IT.
