Jurrassic Park is a triumph for dino theme parks Build more dinosaur theme parks now!

Fukushima is a triumph for nuke power: Build more reactors now!
Quake + tsunami = 1 minor radiation dose so far

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03/14/fukushiima_analysis/

Industrial espionage + life finding a way = only 5 dead so far

Analysis Ingens dinosaur theme park, Jurassic Park, has performed magnificently in the face of a disaster hugely greater than it was designed to withstand, remaining entirely safe throughout and sustaining only minor damage. The unfolding Jurassic Park story has enormously strengthened the case for advanced nations – including Japan – to build more Dinosaur based Amusement Parks, in the knowledge that no imaginable disaster can result in serious problems.

Lets recap on whats happened so far. The tropical storm which hit on Friday was terrifically powerful, shaking the entire island. Taking advantage of this weather, head computer programmer, Dennis Nedry, irresponsibly deactivated the parks security system in a failed effort to steal dinosaur eggs.

If dinosaur theme parks were merely as safe as they are advertised to be, there should have been a major failure right then. As the dinosaurs were no longer held in pens by electric fences a runaway dinosaur swarm could have ensued involving thousands of dinosaurs – probably resulting in the worst thing that can happen to a properly designed dinosaur theme park: everyone gets eaten. In this case the only thing to do is evacuate the island and wait: no actual disaster will take place, but the park is a total writeoff and cleansing the park of dinosaurs will be difficult and take a long time. Eventual cleanup will be protracted and expensive.

In fact, though the security breach was far beyond design limits, the staff were able to reboot the parks computer system: triumph number one. Door locks slammed shut, blocking out the dinosaurs.

However, the dinosaurs were still on the loose at this point: carnivorous reptiles that can sometimes try to eat humans. They have short lives however and cannot breed, so their numbers decay to insignificant levels within days of a shutdown, but for that time the pens will still release a few dinosaurs – and this is still a lot of dangerous reptiles. If they are not dealt with, they can eventually break through the fences, though the resulting mess will not be nearly as bad as a dinosaur swarm.

Thus, even with the computer systems rebooted, the park still needs to be left for some days until the "residual" dinosaurs die away and so power and water need to be supplied for this purpose. Backup door locks came on at all the park buildings without trouble, despite the way-beyond-spec hit from the security breach: triumph number two.

This is obviously emotive stuff – large escaping flesh eating reptiles – even if they are harmless to anyone off the island (the workers inside are in protected control rooms or wearing protective gear - hard hats, the goggles that DO work, etc).

So the situation is being managed and the buildings are being kept secure by rebooting the parks computer.

Health effects have been pretty much zero. At times there have been heightened attacks on staff inside the buildings by short lived dinosaurs due to the pen releases – sometimes enough that an unprotected person next to a dinosaur might have sustained a years normal dose of dinosaur teeth in an hour. This is not particularly terrifying, really – but it is being reported under scaremongering headlines. Another thing the weekend reporters have missed was the fact that all but tiny traces of the dinosaurs were disappearing before they could even reach the buildings; there is essentially no health hazard to people living outside the island. Precautionary evacuations and tests were just that: precautionary.

In fact only one person so far has sustained any measurable injury above normal: a plant worker, according to staff, has lost an arm in the maintenance compound. Once that member of staff is located they will be informed their arm has been found. Other workers have been chased by velociraptors, T-Rexes, etc, but quite frankly being a dinosaur theme park worker at Jurassic Park has been pretty safe compared to the number of automobile deaths each year.

So to sum up: the park is well on its way to shutdown. At no time have their operators come even close to running out of options. The safety systems did not come even close to failing, despite being tested far beyond what they had been designed to take. One person has sustained a small dose of being swallowed by a T-Rex which need cause him no concern.

The whole sequence of events is a ringing endorsement for dinosaur amusement park safety. If this – basically nothing – is what happens when year-old systems are pushed five times and then some beyond their design limits, new dinosaur theme parks much safer yet would be able to resist an asteroid strike without problems.

But you wouldnt know that from looking at the mainstream media. Ignorant fools are suggesting on every hand that Jurrassic Parks problems actually mean fresh obstacles in the way of dinosaur theme parks here in the UK, Europe and the US.

That can only be true if an unbelievable level of public ignorance of the real facts, born of truly dreadful news reporting over the weekend, is allowed to persist.

Is 1 4 tsp Enough Sunscreen for Your Face

Is 1 4 tsp Enough Sunscreen for Your Face

Hopefully, you guys have all made your dermatologists proud motherfuckers by wearing adequate amounts of sunscreen all winter long, and this post is just a helpful reminder. For the rest (and presumably the majority) of you, go buy some more sunscreen!

If you followed my sunscreen series at all last summer, you probably remember that sunscreen cant be applied all willy nilly! The amount of sunscreen you use is essential if youre aiming to get the advertised SPF. In particular, you need to apply sunscreen at an area density of 2 milligrams per centimeter squared. This translates to a lot of sunscreen-- 0.04oz/1.13g for a face alone. I also calculated out my body area and found that I needed about 1.063oz to protect my whole body. (If youre larger than I am, you would need more.)

Sadly, area density isnt converted to volume without more specific info about your sun goop. Still, 1.063oz had a really convenient volume approximation: its about the same as a shotglass of sunscreen. If you are applying a shotglass worth of sunscreen, youre probably in the approximate range of SPF protection that youre aiming for. Unhelpfully, 1.13g does not have such a convenient volume rule of thumb.

...or so you might think.

All over the internet machine, there is a specific recommendation: use 1/4 tsp of sunscreen to cover your face. Although its oft repeated, I couldnt find an original source for how this was calculated, so I decided to do some fact checking with my handy dandy scale.

The sunscreen Im using for this test is the Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Broad Spectrum SPF 60+ Sunscreen. It was not picked for any particular reason; its simply the sunscreen I am using at the moment. I mention it, though, because theres a little fuzziness here, since not every sunscreen is going to have the exact same density. If you are using a sunscreen that is dramatically more or less dense than my sunscreen, my investigation might not be fully applicable.

First, I measured a perfect, flattened out teaspoon, the way I might measure if I were baking a cake. I got... 0.995g. Whomp whomp whomp... remember, we were hoping for 1.13g. In other words, close, but no cigar. Were at 88% of the mass we were hoping for.

Next, I tried out a heaping quarter teaspoon, the way I might measure when the waffle recipe says, "1 tbsp sugar" and Im like, fuck you recipe, I like my waffles sweet. I got a much happier 1.481g, more than the desired 1.13g!

So, whats the verdict? If you already have a quarter teaspoon beside your vanity reserved for sunscreen measurement purposes, choose a heaping teaspoon over a flattened out, perfectly measured, quarter teaspoon, which will probably be too little sunscreen. (And if you have a teaspoon beside your vanity for sunscreen measurement purposes, I know you care.) If you want to purchase a measurement spoon for sunscreen, though, Id go with a 1/3 tsp, which will put you in the "slightly too much"/"better safe than sorry" sunscreen category. [(4)(0.995)=(3)X, X=1.326g, so 1/3 tsp should be closer to 1.326g.]

For those of you who are slightly less precise, Id just give your measuring spoons a quick glance and squeeze out a blobby approximation. (Which is what I do.)

Jammers for Junes Secret Recipe Club

Jammers for Junes Secret Recipe Club

Now just to be clear I am not talking about the kind of jammers that you wear to bed. Im talking about the kind that you eat. Thats right Jammers are cookies! I had never heard of such a cookie until I was browsing through Frans Favs for a recipe to make for my June
Secret Recipe Club choice. Imagine my delight when I came across such a cookie recipe! I love the idea of a tender shortbread crust with a layer of sweet jam and then a sprinkling of brown sugar crumble all coming together to create a cookie. Magic!

I was just as delighted to be assigned Frans wonderful blog as I was to find this recipe for Jammers. Her blog is completely packed with mouth watering recipes. Honestly, it was very hard to chose just one recipe to make from her blog. I really look forward to making her Carrot Cake -which looks like the moistest carrot cake I have seen in a LONG time! - and then the Coffee and Donuts Cake she created is out-of-this-world adorably yummy looking! Such talent that gal Fran has! I have a special little soft spot for Fran because she too originates from New England as a Bostonian. Hooray for Boston! I live just under 2 hours away from Boston in Southern NH. Lets meet up Fran next time you visit Boston. I would love to meet you in person! :-)

Fran suggested using either english muffin rings or whoopie pie molds to make these cookies. Muffin top molds would also work well for these cookies. I used my whoopie pie mold to make my Jammers. Yup, I really enjoy saying that word - "Jammers"...sorry that was just a side note. :-)

Jammers
(recipe from Frans Favs)

Shortbread Dough Ingredients:

2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup powdered sugar
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
2 large egg yolks, at room temperature
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour

Jam of your choice - I used Strawberry and Peach-Mango

Brown Sugar Crumble Topping Ingredients:

3 Tbsp butter
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup lightly packed brown sugar
1 Tbsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ground cinnamon

Directions:

1. Beat butter until smooth in a large bowl. Add in sugars, cinnamon and salt and beat all together until well blended, about 1 minute. Mixture will be smooth and velvety, not fluffy and airy.

2. Add in egg yolks and vanilla extract and mix on low speed. Beat until mixture is homogeneous.

3. Add in flour all at once. Cover mixer with a clean dish towel to protect yourself from any flying flour. Pulse mixer on low speed a couple of times to incorporate flour into batter. Mix on low speed for about 30 seconds more - just enough for the dough to look uniformly moist. The dough will have the consistency of play-doh - soft, moist and clumpy.

4. In the mold of your choice (whoopie or muffin top molds or english muffin rings) fill each cup with dough and flatten with your fingers. The dough should be slightly lower than the top of the pan. Chill mold or rings in freezer for about 15 minutes until dough firms up.

5. Make streusel while dough is chilling.....

Melt butter in small saucepan on stove or in microwave. Add to melted butter the remaining streusel ingredients all at once. Stir all together with a fork to form coarse crumbs. Cover streusel and set aside until ready to use. The crumbs will harden a litthe as the mixture cools off.

6. Spread a couple of teaspoons of jam on top of chilled shortbreads. Sprinkle with streusel....

Pop pan in oven and bake for 15-18 minutes until edges of cookies are light brown. Larger molds will take longer. Remove from oven and cool for 15 minutes before removing from molds. Allow cookies to cool completely before serving.

Share these cookies with those that you adore, cherish and love. They are some special cookies. Above and beyond dlish!

Happy Jammers Baking!

Javadoc equivalent for Grails a necessity

Javadoc equivalent for Grails a necessity

Oh yeah! Graeme Rocher and Marc Palmer have done an excellent job creating the Reference Documentation for the Grails Framework for version 1.0-RC1 (check it out http://grails.org/doc/RC1/). This will be familiar to anyone that has referenced Javas API javadocs like I have for so many years.

This is an absolute necessity for Grails development IMO due to its dynamicity (I think I just made that up). Outside of checking out the source, yuck, how else would you know which options are available? This is another piece of the puzzle before the official release of Grails 1.0.

Here is what the reference documentation covers:
 • Grails Commands - detailed usage information for the grails commands like generate-all, test-app, etc.
 • Constraints - explains all the current constraints available to Domains like blank, maxSize, etc.
 • Controllers - shows all the information available for controllers
 • Domain Classes - shows all methods available to consumers of domain classes like save, validate, find*, etc.
 • Plugins - information available for plugins
 • Services - explains things like scope and transactional
 • Servlet API - typicaly servlet stuff like request and response
 • Tag Libraries - information available for tag libraries
 • Tags - tags you can use in your GSP and I am sure, but not certain, in your JSPs.

Description

Jayne Rylon - Bound For You: Men In Blue 06

Ben has lived through hell. He only survived captivity and torture by the brutes who’d been attempting to develop Sex Offender, a potent aphrodisiac used as a date rape drug, because of the guy he met—and fell in lust with—in the drug lord’s dungeons. Ryan became Ben’s roommate after they escaped. His nearness is constantly tempting Ben to force Ryan to submit to his dark desires. Disgusted by how similar that makes him to their captors, he’s managed to hold off so far. How long can he keep his cravings for Ryan’s sexy body at bay? On top of that, they both seem to be falling for the same woman. If Ben has reservations about unleashing his sexual appetites on Ryan then that goes double for Shari, who is entirely too sweet and inexperienced for either of them. Or so Ben thinks. When Shari teams up with Ryan to change Ben’s mind, it seems like Ben might consider turning their three-way fling into something serious. Until a threat to Ben’s niece reminds them that it’s not always possible to keep those you love safe. After losing his sister in the Sex Offender scandal, Ben might never be ready to take that risk again. None of them could have realized they were bound for something greater than a traditional partner in life, but Shari and Ryan are sure the three of them will benefit from the love of not one, but two, strong, giving soul mates who can help them leave the darkness of their past behind. Will they be able to convince Ben that living fully is better than living cautiously?

Jihva for Coconut Undi

Jihva for Coconut Undi

IMG_0290

This is one more dish that required some getting used to from me. First of all, I had never eaten anything like this before. Secondly, it is eaten with jaggery syrup and fresh butter. "Sorry, with what???", was my first reaction when I saw that combination. The last but not the least, considering that its an everyday breakfast dish and not a festive sweet, the amount of coconut that goes into it is shocking.

In the beginning of my marriage, I generally used to find the amount of coconut being used in Konkani kitchens really objectionable. I mean, how can you treat coconut(!) just like any other ingredient? How can you finish one entire coconut in a days cooking????? I must say that it does not disturb me any longer. One reason is habit. Another one is that the consumption of coconut around me has also gone down in the last few years. Because the doctors are shouting Cholesterol clear and loud. :)

Also, I have learnt to respect other cuisines much more. All said and done, some of the dishes in the Konkani cuisine are just unique. For example, Undi. You dont come across dishes like this every day. Neither the combination of accompaniments. Earlier, it was a strict no-no in my kitchen. However, nowadays, I make it once in a while. So that I continue the tradition. So that my daughter gets to know her fathers cuisine as well as her mothers. So that me carrying the surname Kamath has more meaning to it.

And cholesterol can wait. I am not going to the gym for nothing, am I? :)

Left to right: Grated fresh coconut and raw rice

Recipe for Undi (pronounced Oun-deeh)

Makes 20 pingpong-sized balls (Serves 2-3)

Ingredients:

2 cups raw rice (not parboiled)
1 cup grated fresh coconut
1 tsp salt (or to taste)

2 tbsp oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
½ tsp fenugreek seeds
1 tsp Urad dal (You could use a sprig of curry leaves instead.)

For the jaggery syrup (Ravo in Konkani):
1 cup jaggery
approx. ½ cup water (Sorry, I do not have exact quantity of water for this one. I will update the post when I make it next time.)
Powder from 4-5 cardamom seeds

Method:

1. Soak rice in water for two hours. You could soak it for longer, although its not really necessary. Actually, in case you are in a hurry, and own a good heavy-duty grinder, then soaking the rice only for 30 minutes suffices too.
2. Grind the soaked rice with grated coconut to a coarse batter. The ground granules of rice should be the size of Idli Rawa or coarse semolina granules.
3. Transfer this batter to another vessel. Add one of water to the grinder, shake, and add this water to the batter. (How much more economical can you get? :) Add salt, and give the mixture a thorough stir.
4. In a thick-bottomed pan or a non-stick Kadhai (I used the latter.), heat the oil. Add mustard seeds. Once they begin to splutter, add the fenugreek seeds and Urad dal/curry leaves.
5. Once all mustard seeds have popped, and the fenugreek seeds are a shade of golden brown, add the prepared batter. Cook it uncovered on medium-high heat until much water evaporates and the mixture turns into a thick mass, that is too difficult to be stirred with a spatula.

IMG_0282

6. Take the pan off heat and let the mixture in it cool.
7. Divide the cooled mixture into 20 portions and shape these into flattish balls. Press one of the flat sides with a finger to make a depression, so that the centre too cooks well.

IMG_0285

Undi ready to be steamed in a pressure-cooker

8. Arrange all these balls in a vessel that fits into your pressure cooker. Alternatively, you could arrange the balls on your Idli stand or on the perforated sheet that comes with your Idli steamer (Pedavan in Konkani).
9. Fill your pressure cooker / Idli steamer with enough water and heat it. Once the water starts boiling, place the vessel / stand with Undi in it. Cover and steam the Undi for good 20 minutes. No shortcuts here. Or else, the Undi will stay unpleasantly uncooked.
10. While the Undi are steaming, you could prepare the jaggery syrup by combining the jaggery and water, and cooking on medium heat until the mixture reaches the consistency of honey. Take the syrup off heat and add powdered cardamom seeds to it.

Serve warm Undi with the jaggery syrup and fresh home-made butter (at room temperature) . The way to eat it is by dipping Undi in the butter first and then into the Ravo/jaggery syrup. The morsel that lands into your mouth is sure to make you look forward to the rest of the day. No, really, I have experienced it. :)

IMG_0293

Undi served with jaggery syrup. A simple yet exquisite breakfast.

Note:

Since this breakfast dish requires a lot of preparation, it is advisable to do most of it the previous evening. Usually, I finish the preparation until Step 7 the previous night and store the unsteamed Undi in the refrigerator in a container with a tight lid. I prepare the jaggery syrup too (Step 10) the earlier night; it stays fresh outside the fridge for several days. The following morning, I just steam the Undi and voila...breakfast is ready.

Hope you Guys try out this dish and like it. Hope Ashwini likes it too. As my entry, although late, to Jihva for Coconut. :)
And before I leave, let me wish All of You a very Happy New Year!

Its good for you!!! Spinach Cheese and Pasta Dish

Its good for you!!! Spinach Cheese and Pasta Dish

Not only is this dish good for you, it is an easy "Week Night Meal" too! Good for you and easy peasy to make........Wonderful! And the fun part about this dish is that there are ?crispy French Fried Onions it in!- SUPER YUM! It is so much fun for me to find a recipe that has an unexpected ingredient mixed into it. Who wouldve guessed that French Fried Onions would be part of this recipe?? Yes, to the spinach, pasta and cheese (the title kind of gives it away....) but French Fried Onions?!? Okay, enough of my own personal happiness with this recipe. Time for ME to share the recipe and for YOU to be the judge if this pasta dish makes YOU happy! :-)

Baked Spaghetti with Spinach and Cheese
(recipe from a delicious blog....Cassie Craves)

Ingredients:

4 oz. thin spaghetti or angel hair - broken into 2-inch pieces

1 egg

2 cups (16 oz.) sour cream

1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

1/4 tsp garlic powder

salt and pepper to taste

2 cups shredded monterey jack cheese (or cheese of choice)

1 package (10 oz.) frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well drained

1 can (2.8 oz.) french-fried onions, divided

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cook spaghetti in salted water according to package directions. Drain.

2. While pasta cooks, beat egg (as you can see I got so excited for this recipe that I just combined all ingredients instead of beating egg before adding in the other ingredients....worked out fine) in a medium bowl. Add sour cream, parm cheese, garlic powder and salt and pepper to taste.....

3. Add cooked and drained noodles to sour cream/egg mixture along with cheese, spinach and 1/2 of the fried onions....

Stir well all together. Pour mixture into a well greased 2 quart baking dish.

4. Sprinkle remaining fried onions on top of noodles....

....and then cover with tin foil. Bake for 30 minutes then removed tin foil and continue baking for another 5-6 minutes or until onions are nice and golden brown.

For those of you that like/need to have a meat included on your dinner menu just add a nice grilled piece of chicken along side this dish and viola youve got your *protein, veggie and starch all at once! *Call me crazy but when I serve a dish for dinner if it has cheese in it of some form or another I consider it the "protein" of the dinner.

Enjoy!

Happy Baked Spaghetti with Spinach and Cheese Baking!

Jayalalithaa Left For Her Final Journey Leaving Chennai Grieving

Most popularly called as “Amma”, Jayalalithaas death has been confirmed by Apollo Hospitals and here we at CRB Tech Reviews bring you all the related updates.

Jayalalithaa-death

Apollo earlier denied media reports of the passing away of Amma. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has passed away at 68 on Monday late evening, after she couldn’t recover from a cardiac arrest she suffered on Sunday. Her death was confirmed by the Apollo Hospitals, who had previously denied media reports about her sad demise. The hospital announced Jayalalithaa’s death at 11.30 pm. The hospital management team stated that with indescribable sadness they announce the sad demise of esteemed CM.

Her body has been taken to her residence at Poes Garden in an ambulance. There was heavy presence of police outside her residence and on all the roads leading to it. Jayalalithaa’s body will be kept at Rajaji Hall for public to pay their tribute, as posted by AIADMK official Twitter handle.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi are expected to visit Chennai today for the last rites. The state government declared seven days of mourning, with closing down of educational institutions for three days.

Politicians irrespective of party lines have paid rich tributes to the departed soul. PM Modi expressed his grief over her demise, stating that her death has left a huge void in Indian politics. Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi said that she would be very much missed. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal were also among those who dignitaries who paid their last respects. Her long-time aide and senior party leader O Panneerselvam took oath as the new CM, along with 33 other ministers.

Before the announcement of Amma’s death, Panneerselvam initiated a meeting at the AIADMK headquarters in Royapettah and shared the news to the 132 MLAs party. Panneerselvam was sworn-in by Governor Vidyasagar Rao at a gathering of party leaders at Raj Bhawan. It is the 3rd time he took the charge, first in 2001 and then in 2014. Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo on September 22. After spending 75 days at the hospital, Jayalalithaa passes away for her final journey

Security has been made strict outside Apollo Hospitals and in Chennai. At least 6,000 police personnel have descended on the capital to make sure that law and order is not disturbed. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also affirmed that law and order will not be a problem in Tamil Nadu.

Let’s pray for the departed soul of people’s Amma!

Job market not growing fast enough for big rebound

Job market not growing fast enough for big rebound

In the July 2, 2010 article "Job market not growing fast enough for big rebound," Associated Press economics writers Jeannine Aversa and Christopher S. Rugaber report:
WASHINGTON – A second straight month of lackluster hiring by American businesses is sapping strength from the economic rebound.

The jobless rate fell to 9.5 percent in June, still far too high to signal a healthy economy. It came in slightly lower than the month before only because more than a half-million people gave up looking for work and were no longer counted as unemployed.

The private sector added just 83,000 jobs for the month. Looked at from that angle or almost any other, from a teetering housing market to falling factory orders, the recovery is limping along as it enters the years second half. And that is when the benefits of most of the governments stimulus spending will begin to wear off.

The fate of the economy will hinge on whether it can stand on its own. President Barack Obama acknowledged the slow pace of the recovery and used the new jobs figures to argue for more stimulus spending and extended unemployment benefits.

"Were not headed there fast enough for a lot of Americans," the president said. "Were not headed there fast enough for me, either."

Overall, the nations total payroll actually shrank last month by 125,000, the first decline in six months, the Labor Department said Friday. The loss reflected the end of 225,000 temporary jobs helping the U.S. Census Bureau complete its 10-year head count.

The 83,000 jobs added by the private sector was a better performance than in May, when private job creation nearly stalled. But it fell far short of what the economy needs — at least 200,000 jobs a month — to bring down the unemployment rate.

Nobody, from Obama to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to private economists, expects that anytime soon. And the government has mostly exhausted its realistic options for nudging the economy along faster.

Benchmark interest rates, which at low levels can encourage borrowing to spur economic growth, are already near zero. Republicans in Congress object to additional stimulus spending.

Unemployment is expected to stay above 9 percent through the midterm elections in November. And the Fed predicts joblessness could still be as high as 7.5 percent two years from now. Normal is considered closer to 6 percent, and economists say it will probably take until the middle of this decade to achieve that.

The jobless rate did come down in June from 9.7 percent the month before. But that was mainly because 652,000 people abandoned their job searches.

Even among Americans with secure jobs, confidence is fading. One gauge of consumer confidence fell in June to about 53, down nearly 10 points in a single month. And its well below the reading of 90 typically seen in a healthy economy.

Add to that jitters over Europes debts, an edgy stock market and cautious consumer spending, and the result is an economy essentially moving sideways. Its no surprise that businesses are reviewing their orders and seeing no reason to add to payrolls.

Few big companies say they plan to step up hiring in the second half of the year. Most auto, airline and railroad companies, for example, say they expect little or no job growth, blaming weak demand.

One that does plan to hire, Chrysler Group LLC, expects to add engineers and other workers as it updates its aging line of cars and trucks. The company has announced 1,000 factory jobs in Detroit to meet demand for the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV.

But other companies, like American Airlines, have no plans to significantly boost hiring this year. And major railroads, which have furloughed thousands since the recession, say they have no plans to add employees in the coming months.

In June, manufacturers, the leisure and hospitality industries, temporary staffing agencies, and education and health services providers all added jobs. Retailers, construction firms and financial service providers cut payrolls. So did state and local governments, which are wrestling with budget shortfalls.

On Wall Street, stocks sagged yet again on the news. The Dow Jones industrial average finished down 46 points, its seventh consecutive losing session. The Dow lost more than 10 percent of its value in the second quarter.

Trying to put a positive outlook on the report, Obama said it showed that "we are headed in the right direction." At the same time, he acknowledged there is a "great deal of work to do to repair the economy and get the American people back to work."

His options are limited. Senate Republicans concerned about record budget deficits this week blocked his efforts to extend unemployment benefits for millions of out-of-work Americans.

"The two things that are growing fastest in this Democrat economy are the size of the federal government and the crushing burden of the national debt," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who led opposition to the extension.

All told, 14.6 million people were unemployed in June. An additional 11.2 million have given up their job searches or are working part-time but would prefer full-time work. That adds up to nearly 26 million Americans, and an "underemployment" rate of 16.5 percent.

Among the 225,000 census workers who lost their temporary jobs in June are people who had been unemployed before and now are again. One of them is Michael Stein, who worked for the census in Phoenix on and off since April 2009, after losing his job with an architectural firm.

It all ended for good two weeks ago.

Jobless again, Stein, 49, at least feels better off with the census experience on his resume.

"I was told the State of Arizona is hiring again," he said. "Because of the people I met at the census, theres a possibility if they could find the right position, theyll put in a good word for me."

Eric Model, co-owner of Seal & Co., a shop in Summit, N.J., that sells accessories and toys, said he has not replaced the two back-office workers he let go two years ago. Not including a summer hire, Model has four employees, plus himself.

"It would be nice to get some support," Model said. "But I dont want to go out on a limb and hire somebody, anticipating things will improve. I would rather run with low expenses."

Those Americans who still have jobs drew smaller paychecks last month. Average hourly wages fell 2 cents to $22.53. Workers hours were cut, too. Those factors could dampen consumer spending in the months ahead and further weaken the recovery.

It all threatens to perpetuate a vicious cycle for the economy.

"It is a Catch-22 situation," said Sung Won Sohn, professor at California State University, Channel Islands. "Businesses are reluctant to hire for fear of a double-dip recession. Without jobs, people are watchful of their spending, a danger to the recovery."

Julian Assange masks for Mardi Gras and YOUR action

Julian Assange masks for Mardi Gras and YOUR action

Heres some oversized Julian "masks" for the Sydney based Support Assange & WikiLeaks Coalitions Mardi Gras float. Theyll be used alongside oversized Bradley Manning masks in a coreographed display!

You can make an effective visual statement with the masks especially with a group of people - the bigger the better of course. Coordinated movements or dance by the wearers would be certain to further enhance the impact.

For Mardi Gras, the masks will be professionally printed on corflute. The masks are also designed to be printed at A3 size, then glued to card and cut. The faces can then be attached to sticks to be held as in the example below. Of course you could cut eye holes in the masks, find other novel ways to attach or wear them or produce even larger images for extra effect.

Download Bradley Manning masks

The dashed line around the face gives the mask more definition and the cut-out imagery gives it a DIY feel... "you could easily be Bradley/Julian..." Its inspired by the masks used in the play, The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning.

Youll find more in this poster series here

Jquery Image Items Slider Caroufredsel for Blogger

Jquery Image Items Slider Caroufredsel for Blogger

Jquery Image Items Slider Caroufredsel for Blogger
The content images or the album images in a large number feels much more effective to show in some smaller image items or the image thumbnail items, so that the users can see some images in a smaller size relatively to navigate and scroll that some image items that we specify before. If the user wants to see in more detail that they desired, the image slider will look more beautiful by combining with image lightbox. This is yet another alternative for those of you who need the image slider of the content of blog and want to make the blog content more engaging and interactive.

In order to make the image slider items we will use jquery caroufredsel that equipped with next prev mouse navigation and pagination controls for the user, which will make your blog content more beautiful. Implementing of the jquery image slider caroufreadsel for the image items in the content blog, must be use list of the images such as
and
tag as the others image slider that I have discussed previously. You have to adjust the distance of the image items that is displayed and the users can scroll per number of image items that is displayed.

1. Create HTML Script Code for Image Items Slider Caroufredsel. Here I’ll take the html script code for the images of my content blog that completed with the lightbox effect, description, etc. Then make the complete HTML Script Code for Image Items Slider Caroufredsel from that. So that the Html Script Code would be like this:

 • id="carousel" This will be the css id that will be given the effect of caroufredsel image slider
 • class="prev", class="next", class="pager", id="pager" will associated with id="carousel" for the navigation dan pagination of the image slider.
Put the above html script code to the post content of your blog in the html editor mode!

2. Create the Javascript Code using jquery Caroufredsel and initialize class and id css that used on the html script code above. Make sure the template already use jquery.min.js as library master of all jquery! the Javascript Code would be like this:

Just Put the above Javascript code to the last head of the blog template !

3. Create the CSS Style Script for Image Items Slider Caroufredsel. The adjustment of the CSS Style Script is absolutely necessary because it is depending on the character of the blog template, the content size of your blog, and the pixel size of the image items. look at the first demo below!

The size of the thumbnail image items in landscape orientation was made ??with height=133px and width=150. The Jquery Image Slider Items Caroufredsel was created still on template blog by Artisteer. The width, height, padding, margin of the position of the image item must be adjusted. CSS Style Script as follows:

#wrap-carousel { border: 1px solid #c7d8ad; width: 605px !important; text-align: center; } #carousel { text-align: center; width: 605px; height: 186px; background-color: #e5f2d6; overflow: hidden; position: relative; } #carousel ul { display: block; margin: 0 0 0 20px; padding: 0; position: absolute; } #carousel li { text-align: center; display: block; width: 165px; height: 186px; margin: 0; float: left; } #carousel li img { border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); background-color: white; box-shadow: none !important; padding: 6px ; display: block; float: left; margin: 0; position: absolute; } #carousel li:before { content: none !important; } .clearfix { float: none; clear: both; } #carousel .prev, #carousel .next { background: transparent url(https://agratitudesign-template.googlecode.com/svn/branches/carousel_control2.png) no-repeat 0 0; text-indent: -999px; display: block; overflow: hidden; width: 15px; height: 21px; margin-left: 5px; position: absolute; top: 70px; } #carousel .prev { background-position: 0 0; left: 0px; } #carousel .prev:hover { left: 0px; } #carousel .next { background-position: -18px 0; right: 2px; } #carousel .next:hover { right: 2px; } #carousel .pager { text-align: center; top: 140px; position: relative; } #carousel .pager a { background: transparent url(https://agratitudesign-template.googlecode.com/svn/branches/carousel_control2.png) no-repeat -2px -32px; text-decoration: none; text-indent: -999px; display: inline-block; overflow: hidden; width: 8px; height: 8px; margin: 0 5px 0 0; } #carousel .pager a.selected { background: transparent url(https://agratitudesign-template.googlecode.com/svn/branches/carousel_control2.png) no-repeat -12px -32px; text-decoration: underline; }

As a comparison, for another example is implementation to the blog content, that the template by standard blogger, with the portrait orientation for image items slider as demo 1 on the standard blogger). Lets see the picture below!

CSS Style Script as follows:

#wrap-carousel { width: 570px !important; } #carousel { width: 570px; height: 275px; background-color: #e5f2d6; overflow: hidden; position: relative; } #carousel ul { list-style: none; display: block; margin: 0 17px; padding: 0 10px; position: absolute; } #carousel li { text-align: center; display: block; width: 165px; height: 250px; margin: 5px; float: left; } #carousel li img { border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); background-color: white; box-shadow: none !important; padding: 6px ; display: block; float: left; margin: 0; position: absolute; } .clearfix { float: none; clear: both; } #carousel .prev, #carousel .next { background: transparent url(https://agratitudesign-template.googlecode.com/svn/branches/carousel_control2.png) no-repeat 0 0; text-indent: -999px; display: block; overflow: hidden; width: 15px; height: 21px; margin-left: 5px; position: absolute; top: 120px; } #carousel .prev { background-position: 0 0; left: 0px; } #carousel .prev:hover { left: 0px; } #carousel .next { background-position: -18px 0; right: 2px; } #carousel .next:hover { right: 2px; } #carousel .pager { text-align: center; top: 230px; position: relative; } #carousel .pager a { background: transparent url(https://agratitudesign-template.googlecode.com/svn/branches/carousel_control2.png) no-repeat -2px -32px; text-decoration: none; text-indent: -999px; display: inline-block; overflow: hidden; width: 8px; height: 8px; margin: 0 5px 0 0; } #carousel .pager a.selected { background: transparent url(https://agratitudesign-template.googlecode.com/svn/branches/carousel_control2.png) no-repeat -12px -32px; text-decoration: underline; }

Has noted here is how to remove the bullet style of the images list by inserting list-style: none; to the css id #carousel ul without requiring additional css id #carousel li: before (only for Artisteer template)
