Its not garage sale season yet

Its not garage sale season yet

But I will be looking for a stand mixer! Look HERE! (Its at About.com - so forgive the pop-ups, K?) A DIY Ball WINDER!! Wooo Hooo!

I started on my Kiri shall. Its in lace-weight merino in a very light champagne/khaki color. I only have 5,000 yards of this, so I may over dye some of it. Kool Aid if I have too! I didnt get far enough for a progress shot, though.

It looks like DH and I will be cash poor/house rich in the coming months, so all yarn purchases will be double evaluated. All yarn must have a purpose, all purposes must be useful to whomever gets the finished item.

Yarn in Stash:

several balls of dishcloth cotton - dish/wash clothes for next Christmas
2 balls of finer cotton - the turkish stitch bag (1 ball each)
2 skeins of Axelles Water Lilies (sw merino) (see below) - depending on my Sockapalooza assignment may become socks for said or something for a neiceling
Cotton Ease - could be dresses for neicelings - hmmm
Fishermans wool - both dyed and one whole undyed. NO IDEAS!
5000 yrds lace-weight merino - Kiri until I cry?

I know that isnt a LOT by some standards, but it will keep me busy while I eat beans and cornbread for the next two months to get this mortgage under our belts.

So, pics tomorrow? I dont know just yet!

Its not nothing

Its not nothing

On Friday I went to the dentist. If I told you how long it had been since my last appointment...well...it had been a while. (I could give excuses, like switching insurance providers, but really I just hadnt prioritized finding a new dentist.)

The dentist walks in the room. Hes young and adorably cute and slightly nervous. He makes small talk. He asks me what I do and if I am working that day. "Im sure my yoga pants and sneakers scream Im heading into the office after this" I think to myself. "No clients today" I tell him after previously mentioning that Im a therapist. He looks a bit confused and then makes a comment about having a day off.

"Actually, I get to enjoy spending the day with my son" I explain. He asks how old he is, and a few other typical oh-you-have-a-baby questions. He reviews my x-rays with me. The hygenist comes in to clean my teeth.

As an aside: For someone who hadnt been to the dentist in over 18 months my teeth looked fantastic. You know, except that I should floss more often.

So then its time to go and he returns to thank me again for being a new patient. Then he adds, "And enjoy your day of doing nothing!" I pause. Smile. And go on my way.

I spent the walk home kicking myself. Heres the thing: the young adorably cute dentist meant nothing by his comment. I know he wasnt trying to put down the role and value of raising a child. But, in that moment he did. I wasnt hurt, or offended. I genuinely believe it was a thoughtless comment. But I was letting down myself and other parents who work part-time or stay home to raise their children. The mindset that spending a day with a 7 month old is "doing nothing" is just plain inaccurate.

What should I have said back? Im not entirely sure. I wish I could have encapsulated that a day with a baby makes you a teacher, a nurse, a housekeeper, a playmate, a chef, an organizer, a cuddler, a calmer, a nurturer, a dancer, a singer, and a million other things. My silence was a mistake. Lesson learned.

Jairo Díaz This is Not the End

Jairo Díaz This is Not the End

Buenos días chicos! Para acabar la semana os traigo un post muy especial! Es la colección "This is Not the End" de mi

John Abraham Quoted Sonakshi Sinha As Not Among Those Dainty Dancing Girls

John Abraham Quoted Sonakshi Sinha As Not Among Those Dainty Dancing Girls

Today CRB Tech Reviews write about views shared by John Abraham on Sonakshi Sinha and their upcoming action film Force 2. For the first time John and Sonakshi will be seen together and for the first time they share their experiences on how it was to work with each other in an action drama. The screen space is also being shared by Tahir Raj Bhasin of Mardaani fame and is playing again the role of a baddie.

Sonakshi-and-Jhon

After watching Akira we all know that action and Sonakshi Sinha goes together. After showcasing her fearless avatar in Akira this year, Sonakshi is all set to take the charge in yet another drama “Force 2”. The movie is slated to release this Friday on November 18 and from what its looks we can perceive that this one is going to be one of her best ones.

To mention, Force 2 and Akira are both gonna be similar since both are action films, let us clear the air. They are simply opposite in their storyline. Sonakshi confessed this by saying that there is a huge difference. The types of films Force 2 and Akira are, they are totally different, the directors are so very different and their styles are also unique. In Akira it was little rawer and in Force 2 they worked with a variety of action directors from all across the world. Even the action sequences include run, hand-to-hand combat, chases, car chase sequences and also gunfights.

Moreover it’s the first venture by Shona and John. In fact, John exclusively stated that he thinks Sonakshi is a fantastic actor. Be it acting or stunts – since the day first he was mighty impressed with her. John also added that she is fantastic and she is effortless with the action. He continued to state that it’s not just about her action; it’s about her attitude as a whole. She is not one of those dainty, dancing girls.... she really means what she does and she is just awesome.....Thus John concluded.

John is popular for performing high-end action stunts in most of his films that is why it wasn’t a tough thing for him to prepare for the role.

No other actor in Bollywood has explored the action genre like John and this is what the audience loves to watch him do. Though John has done a couple of comedy films, but he looks best when he is indulged in some high-end action and this is how he is more admired and remembered.

Its an Auction! Or Not

Its an Auction! Or Not

You have said never to call an editor to check on the status of your query or manuscript submission. Other editors and editorial assistants have said the same thing. Just. Dont. Call. I understand this.

But what does the aspiring author do when a manuscript on multiple submission garners an offer from one publishing house? Presumably they will want to hear back within a reasonably short time frame, and yet, mailing status checks and "Just so you know, Ive had an offer/serious interest from another house looking at this manuscript that I sent you a while back," letters and waiting for a response on those can take a WHILE. (Especially if youre mailing things from Canada to the US, as I am. Snail mail is not far off.)

How does one go about this without making an interested publisher wait too long, angering the other editors who might be considering her work, and calling anybody?
The question is whether youve submitted to a slush pile or not. (For clarity, I am not talking about whether you put an editors name on the submission-- most of those end up in the slush pile, regardless.)

If you submitted to the slush pile, dont bother informing other publishers. The chances that they know where your manuscript is, much less have read it yet, are fairly infinitesimal. (Sorry. This is one of the reasons people get an agent.) Just go with the offer youve got, if its reasonable, or if its not, say no.

If you have submitted to an editor (i.e., because of a relationship with the editor, or because you attended a conference at which she spoke and she offered to read submissions following the conference, or some other reason), then it would be acceptable and prudent to email that editor and let her know you have interest elsewhere.

Meanwhile, let the publisher making the offer know that you just need to check in with the other people who have the manuscript, and then youll get back to them. If you dont hear back from the other publishers within a week, you should go ahead with the offer on the table. If any of the other publishers do want to enter bidding, they should be willing to get an offer on the table in a matter of days, not weeks.

Job market not growing fast enough for big rebound

Job market not growing fast enough for big rebound

In the July 2, 2010 article "Job market not growing fast enough for big rebound," Associated Press economics writers Jeannine Aversa and Christopher S. Rugaber report:
WASHINGTON – A second straight month of lackluster hiring by American businesses is sapping strength from the economic rebound.

The jobless rate fell to 9.5 percent in June, still far too high to signal a healthy economy. It came in slightly lower than the month before only because more than a half-million people gave up looking for work and were no longer counted as unemployed.

The private sector added just 83,000 jobs for the month. Looked at from that angle or almost any other, from a teetering housing market to falling factory orders, the recovery is limping along as it enters the years second half. And that is when the benefits of most of the governments stimulus spending will begin to wear off.

The fate of the economy will hinge on whether it can stand on its own. President Barack Obama acknowledged the slow pace of the recovery and used the new jobs figures to argue for more stimulus spending and extended unemployment benefits.

"Were not headed there fast enough for a lot of Americans," the president said. "Were not headed there fast enough for me, either."

Overall, the nations total payroll actually shrank last month by 125,000, the first decline in six months, the Labor Department said Friday. The loss reflected the end of 225,000 temporary jobs helping the U.S. Census Bureau complete its 10-year head count.

The 83,000 jobs added by the private sector was a better performance than in May, when private job creation nearly stalled. But it fell far short of what the economy needs — at least 200,000 jobs a month — to bring down the unemployment rate.

Nobody, from Obama to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to private economists, expects that anytime soon. And the government has mostly exhausted its realistic options for nudging the economy along faster.

Benchmark interest rates, which at low levels can encourage borrowing to spur economic growth, are already near zero. Republicans in Congress object to additional stimulus spending.

Unemployment is expected to stay above 9 percent through the midterm elections in November. And the Fed predicts joblessness could still be as high as 7.5 percent two years from now. Normal is considered closer to 6 percent, and economists say it will probably take until the middle of this decade to achieve that.

The jobless rate did come down in June from 9.7 percent the month before. But that was mainly because 652,000 people abandoned their job searches.

Even among Americans with secure jobs, confidence is fading. One gauge of consumer confidence fell in June to about 53, down nearly 10 points in a single month. And its well below the reading of 90 typically seen in a healthy economy.

Add to that jitters over Europes debts, an edgy stock market and cautious consumer spending, and the result is an economy essentially moving sideways. Its no surprise that businesses are reviewing their orders and seeing no reason to add to payrolls.

Few big companies say they plan to step up hiring in the second half of the year. Most auto, airline and railroad companies, for example, say they expect little or no job growth, blaming weak demand.

One that does plan to hire, Chrysler Group LLC, expects to add engineers and other workers as it updates its aging line of cars and trucks. The company has announced 1,000 factory jobs in Detroit to meet demand for the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV.

But other companies, like American Airlines, have no plans to significantly boost hiring this year. And major railroads, which have furloughed thousands since the recession, say they have no plans to add employees in the coming months.

In June, manufacturers, the leisure and hospitality industries, temporary staffing agencies, and education and health services providers all added jobs. Retailers, construction firms and financial service providers cut payrolls. So did state and local governments, which are wrestling with budget shortfalls.

On Wall Street, stocks sagged yet again on the news. The Dow Jones industrial average finished down 46 points, its seventh consecutive losing session. The Dow lost more than 10 percent of its value in the second quarter.

Trying to put a positive outlook on the report, Obama said it showed that "we are headed in the right direction." At the same time, he acknowledged there is a "great deal of work to do to repair the economy and get the American people back to work."

His options are limited. Senate Republicans concerned about record budget deficits this week blocked his efforts to extend unemployment benefits for millions of out-of-work Americans.

"The two things that are growing fastest in this Democrat economy are the size of the federal government and the crushing burden of the national debt," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who led opposition to the extension.

All told, 14.6 million people were unemployed in June. An additional 11.2 million have given up their job searches or are working part-time but would prefer full-time work. That adds up to nearly 26 million Americans, and an "underemployment" rate of 16.5 percent.

Among the 225,000 census workers who lost their temporary jobs in June are people who had been unemployed before and now are again. One of them is Michael Stein, who worked for the census in Phoenix on and off since April 2009, after losing his job with an architectural firm.

It all ended for good two weeks ago.

Jobless again, Stein, 49, at least feels better off with the census experience on his resume.

"I was told the State of Arizona is hiring again," he said. "Because of the people I met at the census, theres a possibility if they could find the right position, theyll put in a good word for me."

Eric Model, co-owner of Seal & Co., a shop in Summit, N.J., that sells accessories and toys, said he has not replaced the two back-office workers he let go two years ago. Not including a summer hire, Model has four employees, plus himself.

"It would be nice to get some support," Model said. "But I dont want to go out on a limb and hire somebody, anticipating things will improve. I would rather run with low expenses."

Those Americans who still have jobs drew smaller paychecks last month. Average hourly wages fell 2 cents to $22.53. Workers hours were cut, too. Those factors could dampen consumer spending in the months ahead and further weaken the recovery.

It all threatens to perpetuate a vicious cycle for the economy.

"It is a Catch-22 situation," said Sung Won Sohn, professor at California State University, Channel Islands. "Businesses are reluctant to hire for fear of a double-dip recession. Without jobs, people are watchful of their spending, a danger to the recovery."

Its not my problem

Its not my problem

A lady friend, “Janet”, has been without a serious relationship for the twenty-plus years I’ve known her.  Never been married.   Janet recently began to date a gentleman in his 60’s (as she is) who she was concerned about—apparently his sex drive is quite low.

They are going away together for a weekend, and she again repeated a complaint that he was not…hmmm…well, “male” enough in terms of being aggressive, initiative, sexual.  They’re “working things out” she said, but it’s frustrating.

I suggested that they might want to go into counseling together.  Janet rejected the idea: “I’m not the one with the problem” she said.

Well…

There are at least two reasons why I think this statement is tone-deaf and dishonest.

1) If she is attempting to work out a relationship with him, then their sexual interactions involve both of them.  A coach or therapist can give specific “prescriptions” to two people for games, conversations, communications, environments and so forth that would be very difficult to give to a single person, who then has to go and negotiate the instructions with his/her partner.

2) She’s not with this guy by coincidence.  Or by someone else’s choice.   This is her choice, the best she can do with the resources and options she has.  In other words, he is a mirror.    She isn’t able to extend her femininity to attract a man with more masculine force than this one has (at least, not one without serious drawbacks in other arenas).  Relationships are a chance to see ourselves in a mirror, and if we accept that, we get to grow.

If Janet doesn’t see this, and use this as an opportunity to see herself…if she cannot see herself as energetic twin with the man who is trying to love her, I fear that this, like all her other relationships, will end in ashes, and she will go on.  And the tragedy is that I don’t believe she REALLY doesn’t think it has anything to do with her.

Rather, she is too afraid to look at who she really is.  Afraid that if she looks deeply she will find something so hideous and broken that she will lose hope.  Better to live in the illusion that “it’s someone else.”

She is not my client, she is my friend.  So there are things I don’t say.  I was not invited.
But if she did ask,  her answer is to love herself so deeply that it overflows, and then be generous with the overflow.  With the advantage of already being filled with love, she could afford to go to couples counseling whether or not she was serving him…or them…or herself.

And from that position, I honestly believe, she has a chance.

As it is…all I can do is love her, and hope for the best.

But frankly…that’s not a lot of hope.

Namaste,
Steve
