Apollo earlier denied media reports of the passing away of Amma. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has passed away at 68 on Monday late evening, after she couldnt recover from a cardiac arrest she suffered on Sunday. Her death was confirmed by the Apollo Hospitals, who had previously denied media reports about her sad demise. The hospital announced Jayalalithaas death at 11.30 pm. The hospital management team stated that with indescribable sadness they announce the sad demise of esteemed CM.
Her body has been taken to her residence at Poes Garden in an ambulance. There was heavy presence of police outside her residence and on all the roads leading to it. Jayalalithaas body will be kept at Rajaji Hall for public to pay their tribute, as posted by AIADMK official Twitter handle.
President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi are expected to visit Chennai today for the last rites. The state government declared seven days of mourning, with closing down of educational institutions for three days.
Politicians irrespective of party lines have paid rich tributes to the departed soul. PM Modi expressed his grief over her demise, stating that her death has left a huge void in Indian politics. Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi said that she would be very much missed. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal were also among those who dignitaries who paid their last respects. Her long-time aide and senior party leader O Panneerselvam took oath as the new CM, along with 33 other ministers.
Before the announcement of Ammas death, Panneerselvam initiated a meeting at the AIADMK headquarters in Royapettah and shared the news to the 132 MLAs party. Panneerselvam was sworn-in by Governor Vidyasagar Rao at a gathering of party leaders at Raj Bhawan. It is the 3rd time he took the charge, first in 2001 and then in 2014. Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo on September 22. After spending 75 days at the hospital, Jayalalithaa passes away for her final journey
Security has been made strict outside Apollo Hospitals and in Chennai. At least 6,000 police personnel have descended on the capital to make sure that law and order is not disturbed. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also affirmed that law and order will not be a problem in Tamil Nadu.
