Is There Such a Thing As Slow Prototyping

Is There Such a Thing As Slow Prototyping

IDEO designer Keaton Herzer has written a terrific blog post titled, "What the hell is Rapid Prototyping?"  Heres an excerpt:

It implies that there is an alternative?—?slow prototyping. I’m not aware of any design team that practices slow prototyping. That would be a waste of time and money for everyone and thatis super obvious. Let’s remind ourselves what the purpose of a prototype is: to test our ideas!  History and statistics tell us that our ideas are wrong MOST of the time. So most of our prototypes will get thrown out after being invalidated. If that’s the case, why would we do anything but prototype rapidly? If you’re going to build a prototype?—?build it. Then test it. Then learn how bad your ideas were. Then do it again.  I guess you could do that slowly if you wanted to, but I don’t see the point. There is no such thing as “rapid prototyping.” There is only prototyping?—?and you should be doing it rapidly.

I think slow prototyping does exist though, and its not a good thing.  Consider how large companies engage in what they consider to be prototyping.  They build a mock-up of a potential new product.  However, they take quite some time to do so.  They try to make it as "beautiful" as possible, as free of imperfections and problems as they can imagine.  Why?  They are actually trying to validate an idea that they have.  Its a demonstration to others in the organization, often used to solicit resource commitments.  Its not actually prototyping.  Why is it slow?  They do not want to hear lots of criticism.  They want positive feedback, so they take lots of time to make it as "good" as they can.   To me, thats the type of slow prototyping that does exist in many organizations, and it often is counterproductive.   It inhibits learning and adaptation, and thereby prevents the type of rapid improvement that Herzer describes.

Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Feedback

Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Feedback

The Wall Street Journal reports today on the changing culture at Kimberly-Clark, maker of products such as Huggies diapers and Kleenex tissues.   In this article, Lauren Weber writes the following:

"One of the company’s goals now is managing out dead wood, aided by performance-management software that helps track and evaluate salaried workers’ progress and quickly expose laggards... Armed with personalized goals for employees and large quantities of data, Kimberly-Clark said it expects employees to keep improving—or else. People can’t duck and hide in the same way they could in the past, said Mr. Boston, who oversees talent management globally for the firm.  It has been a steep climb for a company that once resisted conflict and fostered a paternalistic culture that inspired devotion from its workers."

Weber goes to write that Kimberly-Clarks performance management system reflects a trend taking place in many companies, in which firms have eliminated annual merit reviews and replaced them with more continuous feedback.   She cites examples such as Accenture, Adobe, and GE, all of whom eliminated traditional annual performance reviews.   These firms have adopted real-time feedback systems for a number of reasons including, according to Weber, the belief that, "Millennial workers, meanwhile, demand more feedback, more coaching and a stronger sense of their career path."

My question is simple though:   Can we take this shift to continuous monitoring, evaluation, and feedback too far?   I keep hearing that millennials want more feedback, but Ive spent a ton of time around young people as a college professor.  Im not sure any of us love being critiqued at every turn.   We work on some projects that take some time to get off the ground.   Some ideas require some time to take shape.   In short, I think this shift taking place in corporate America raises some critical questions:  Is too much early "feedback" going to quash some creative ideas?    Are managers adept enough at offering constructive critique to make this type of real-time feedback system effective at many firms?  Are we evaluating what truly drives success, or are we focused on what is easy to measure?  Are we encouraging short term thinking when we provide real-time feedback, or are we making sure to keep long term objectives in mind?

John Abraham Quoted Sonakshi Sinha As Not Among Those Dainty Dancing Girls

John Abraham Quoted Sonakshi Sinha As Not Among Those Dainty Dancing Girls

Today CRB Tech Reviews write about views shared by John Abraham on Sonakshi Sinha and their upcoming action film Force 2. For the first time John and Sonakshi will be seen together and for the first time they share their experiences on how it was to work with each other in an action drama. The screen space is also being shared by Tahir Raj Bhasin of Mardaani fame and is playing again the role of a baddie.

Sonakshi-and-Jhon

After watching Akira we all know that action and Sonakshi Sinha goes together. After showcasing her fearless avatar in Akira this year, Sonakshi is all set to take the charge in yet another drama “Force 2”. The movie is slated to release this Friday on November 18 and from what its looks we can perceive that this one is going to be one of her best ones.

To mention, Force 2 and Akira are both gonna be similar since both are action films, let us clear the air. They are simply opposite in their storyline. Sonakshi confessed this by saying that there is a huge difference. The types of films Force 2 and Akira are, they are totally different, the directors are so very different and their styles are also unique. In Akira it was little rawer and in Force 2 they worked with a variety of action directors from all across the world. Even the action sequences include run, hand-to-hand combat, chases, car chase sequences and also gunfights.

Moreover it’s the first venture by Shona and John. In fact, John exclusively stated that he thinks Sonakshi is a fantastic actor. Be it acting or stunts – since the day first he was mighty impressed with her. John also added that she is fantastic and she is effortless with the action. He continued to state that it’s not just about her action; it’s about her attitude as a whole. She is not one of those dainty, dancing girls.... she really means what she does and she is just awesome.....Thus John concluded.

John is popular for performing high-end action stunts in most of his films that is why it wasn’t a tough thing for him to prepare for the role.

No other actor in Bollywood has explored the action genre like John and this is what the audience loves to watch him do. Though John has done a couple of comedy films, but he looks best when he is indulged in some high-end action and this is how he is more admired and remembered.

Is Being Smart The Same As Being Intelligent

Is Being Smart The Same As Being Intelligent

Saw this interesting post as I was playing around internet

Often, the phrases 'you're smart!' and 'you're intelligent!' are used severally and/or interchangeably. But on a deeper introspection, the words, 'smart' and 'intelligent' actually bear different meanings.

In my opinion, being intelligent applies to the academic field and refers to someone who's good at academics, someone with good analytical skills required for tackling academic issues and problems.

Smartness, on the other hand, refers to having the common sense or sharp sense of reasoning to navigate the ups and downs of life, and knowing how to do the right thing at the right time to get what one wants.

While intelligence measures your academic ability and academic success, smartness measures your ability to identify and apply common sense in life to achieve what you want in life. In life, you often meet

these 3 sets of people:

- the very intelligent people who are exceptional at academics but are not actually smart(good in academics but timid on the streets, lacking social
skills to get along/interact with others, and the common sense required to survive on the streets ie not street smart). Examples are, for example, a
professor with many degrees and levels of academic success who still cannot balance his check book or cannot manage his finances to get him to a
financially comfortable level.

- the very smart people who are exceptional in applying common sense in life but are only averagely intelligent in academics. Speak with them and they amaze you with their great deal of
common sense and knowledge about how to get by in life, understand and manage people, etc) but academically they are only average. An example
would be people who were seen as 'average' in school but who went on to build successful companies, businesses, or land amazing jobs because they had the common sense and social skills to get along in life and network with the right set of people.

- the smart and intelligent people at the same time -these people are intelligent and also street-savvy. They combine intelligence with common sense.
These people are successful in their chosen fields of endeavour. An example would be Mrs. Okonjo Iweala, who is both intelligent and smart at the same time.
I think smartness is the application of intelligence or intelligence in motion. One cannot be smart if one isn't intelligent, at least, a little bit. To be smart, you need some level of intelligence, albeit how small it
is.

These are only my opinions.
What are your opinions? What do you think?

Its A Hat Trick As India Become Kabaddi World Champions of 2016 !

Its A Hat Trick As India Become Kabaddi World Champions of 2016 !

CRB Tech reviews celebrates Indias victory over Iran to lift the Kabaddi 2016 world cup.

Want to know the best part?

Indias-victory-over-Iran-Kabaddi-2016

India have managed to score a hat-trick by winning the title three times in a row.

In a match challenged between two kabaddi Goliaths, India beat an unflinching Iran side 38-29 to win Kabaddi World Cup for the third time in succession. Riding on a terrific execution by Ajay Thakurs 12 points, the hosts created a solid rebound in the second half at the TransStadia Arena in Ahmadabad on Saturday to send the packed crowd into delights.

The final resembled a boxing match as both teams exchanged punches and gave it on a par with they got. India made the early blows when Sandeep Narwal and Ajay Thakur scored raid points to lead 2-0 in the third minute. Meraj Sheykh scored first point for the opponents as they equaled the game at 2-2 in the fourth minute. Irans defense were up as they contained Pardeep Narwal adequately and afterward sent Ajay Thakur to the seat to lead 5-4 in the eighth minute.

Meraj Sheykh kept on being a thistle in the Indian defense, however Nitin Tomar thought of a splendid attack and scored two points in the eighteenth minute as India trailed 11-12. India were again lessened to only one man and Iran delivered the first all out of the match in the nineteenth minute to lead 16-12. The first half had a place Irans defense as they made a superb showing with regards to on Indian raiders as they drove 18-13 towards the end of the first half. Manjeet Chhillar and Pardeep Narwal scored zero points and their repressed exhibitions hurt Indias odds.

The match satisfied its desires as both groups contended energetically and declined to offer a bit of leeway. Captain Anup Kumar scored his trademark reward point to level the scores at 6-6 in the tenth minute. Meraj Sheykh scored with an astounding strike and decreased India to only three men as Iran drove 9-7 in the thirteenth minute. Indias defense had a worse than average initial 15 minutes as they scored only one tackle point. Iran reduced India to only two men yet a splendid super tackle by Mohit Chhillar the sixteenth minute to slice the lead only one point once more.

In the end, it was a great win for India as they achieved the feat three times in a row.

Three cheers to team India from CRB Tech reviews!!!

Its the end of NPR as we know it

Its the end of NPR as we know it

Im a total NPR addict. Its one of the reasons Ive become middle-aged before my time. NPRs normal target audience seems to be the older end of the boomer range. So imagine my shock when the local sponsor of Morning Edition last week on my public radio station was And I Feel Fine: Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987.

While I love REM, and am happy that there is a newer (older) version of Eponymous, Im a little weirded out that REM has anything to do with NPR, MarketPlaces bad-ass music selections notwithstanding. Even stranger, the way they said it, the album itself was the sponsor - not the band, not IRS records, but the album. I cant get my head around an album being the local sponsor of a radio station, especially since albums are now more conceptual than tangible in the age of IPOD. Its kind of like the War On Terra, except benign.

Its As Easy As 1 2 3 Unless Youre Crazy

Its As Easy As 1 2 3 Unless Youre Crazy

I am searching for information on how to submit/send a manuscript to a Publishing House(s).
I have written a whimsical, magical Childrens Picture Book. I love the book and I think the query letter is ready to go!
I have the 2010 Writers Market Guide, and I can find who does and who does not accept what and when! I cant find how to physically mail the manuscript to those publishers that specify:Send query and manuscript.
I need some very basic info e.g. Should the manuscript be loose? Does it go in a folder, or an envelope, or an envelope inside another envelope? Where should the writers name be written on the manuscript? Are there specific rules somewhere? Is this a secret club?
I think writing the book was the easy part! What do I need to do to accommodate editors?
I need an on-line class called: "Get Me To The Post Office with the Correct Folders, Envelopes and Stamps!"
I dont even like asking you to respond to such elementary questions. Is there a book called Envelopes and Manuscripts For Dummies?
First: Calm down.

Second: Remember that youre sending business correspondence. Look at the publishers submission guidelines, and obey them. Past that, make what you send us simple, straightforward, easy to read, and no-frills. Interact with publishers like a fellow professional, and you wont go wrong.

The reason there seem to be a lot of "rules" out there is that we get correspondence from a hell of a lot of people who think theyre sending their manuscript:

a. To people who should be flattered and grateful for the 9,574th piece of slush to arrive in the office this year (rather than feeling a much more likely ambivalence). No, they didnt send us an SASE or read our submission guidelines, but we should still be willing to spend $18 to put their oversize original art in the mail back to them. And if not we should be willing to listen to lengthy tirades in which they threaten us with legal action.

b. To the fairies. Which is why its printed in Curlz, bound in ribbons, and shipped with a pound of loose glitter in the box.

c. To their 5th grade teacher, who was SO IMPRESSED when they turned in their report with their own "illustrations", and bound in a plastic folder. We will be impressed by plain paper, and no illustrations. There is no A for effort in publishing--what youre selling us is the writing, and any attempt to distract from that is very, very transparent.

d. To a class of kindergartners. Which is why the cover letter launches into a gooey exploration of the kinds of dreams unicorns probably have, rather than telling us directly what the manuscript is about and why you think wed want it.

e. To god knows who. I havent the faintest idea who people think is on the other end of submissions that include stuffed animals, baked goods, clothing, dental molds, intimate photos of themselves, q-tips, five kinds of rice, or a bunch of pressed insects.

Third: Now go to the post office.
