January in Movies

January in Movies

This month has literally been a whole year wrapped into 31 days. I swear everything has happened. The biggest thing, of course, was going to Japan, which feels like it happened in a whole different life (how I miss it). Mind you, when I got back, I basically had a whole new love: in the space of a few days I got tickets to an Ed Sheeran concert, bought my first car and got another job. Wow. The school holidays we had werent really holidays for me, as I was working for most of it, and when I wasnt working I was sleeping, and when I wasnt doing that I was trying to blog or watch movies. I never really got anything done, and then all of a sudden we started school this week. Now that was another thing - going back to school as Head Girl. It was insanely daunting, and already the work is piling (though I am on top of it). I dont even wanna get started on how crazy this weekend is going to be, but I will be seeing Silver Linings Playbook at the end of it (hopefully) since there arent ANY showing times in which I can see Zero Dark Thirty in the next week. That makes me sad. Alas, heres my rather sparse film-viewing for the month, which is pretty alright considering I went ten days without seeing a movie.

Movies I hadnt seen before until the month of January...

American History X - The first movie I saw this year. A good way to start the year, methinks.
American Gangster - While were on the subject of America. This movie was really good, if a little too long.
Detachment - One of the greatest accidental discoveries Ive ever made.
Cosmopolis - I dont really remember much of this since I checked out around half an hour in. I just wanted everyone to shut up. I like how this movie has quite the fanbase, and Im sad that I cant join it.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi - Decided I may as well give this a go before I went to Japan. It made me crave sushi. Until I actually had it...yeah, that wasnt my favourite.
Goon - Finally got to see this. Man, that was bloody. It was also bloody funny.
Pitch Perfect - Enjoyed this so much. It was annoying because everyone on the plane was watching it and when I was watching something else, I got distracted by the screens that were watching this movie.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower - I cried. I got the soundtrack. I still cry.
Lawless - Jessica Chastain on the plane! This one was okay. Loved Tom Hardys grunting in it. It was rather violent. Guy Pearces character was annoying. And yeah, quite a few problems, but overall it was enjoyable.
Beasts of the Southern Wild - Id like to watch this again some time, since watching it on the plane didnt really do it justice. Quvenzhane Wallis was really good.
End of Watch - I still cant get over this bloody movie.
Les Miserables - Thinking of doing a one man performance of this musical sometime this year. Will you all come see it? Thanks.
Lockout - Guy Pearce is hot in this movie. I wish hed do another badass action movie like this...but with better material (it was still very entertaining though).
The Devils Double - Still cant get over Dominic Cooper in this movie. And the fact that it is directed by the guy who directed Once Were Warriors. Theres hope for us future NZ film makers!
Dazed and Confused - I didnt love it, but Richard Linklater is awesome.
Coriolanus - I reserved this copy in the morning and it didnt come back until 7pm. So I had to walk up to the shop in the heat to get it. I know Dannevirke aint big but man, it was a hassle getting this movie.
Safety Not Guaranteed - This movie was so cool. Mark Duplass is one of my new favourite people.
Django Unchained - I cannot stop listening to that soundtrack. And I need to get my Team Waltz t-shirts asap.
Not Suitable for Children - Decided to give this Aussie comedy a go. I liked it. Sarah Snook was so cool...and her character had the same name as me (thats a rare occurrence, let me tell you).
Birdsong - Just because I have a major crush on Eddie Redmayne now.
A Woman Under the Influence - A little long, but so tremendously good. The performances by Peter Falk and Gena Rowlands were just amazing.
Silent House - Well, that went slowly but then it escalated way too quickly. That was not a safe altitude.
360 - I have no idea what that movie was about.

Movies Ive seen before but felt the need to watch again because Im cool like that...

Bernie - Just because the trailer was getting to me at work so I had to watch it again.
The Lincoln Lawyer - Just because Matthew McConaughey.
Looper - Everyone was also watching this on the plane and it was distracting me so I gave it another spin. Absolutely love this movie to pieces.
The Help - After we went and saw Django Unchained I went and stayed with my friend and we decided to watch a movie. Always have to pick the Jessica Chastain one. Which was not a good idea because they thought I was weird when I got so excited when she showed up on screen.

What do you think of these movies? Did you see anything good this month?
