JAPAN ONCE MORE!

One of my favorite photos from the last Japan visit. Looks like a nature show set up. "The Shinjuku crab lay in wait for careless prey. Salary man on his way to work is oblivous to the craftilly camouflaged crustacean. In a flash it will be over and Shinjuku crab will hunt anew. Perhaps a Pachinko housewife for dessert?"

All engines are go! Were cleared for take off! And all such launch lingo. After a series of fluctuating fates (work schedules right in the way, work schedules get pushed back; missing passport, found passport; wife can go, now wife has to stay...etcetera), Enrico and I got permission to take a week off. What do these two do when let out of the pen? They hie off to Japan, thats what!

Yep, you heard me, in Japan! Where in Japan? Thats still being worked out but watch this space for more info. Those of you who will be conveniently situated to be there anyway please come and join us. Those of you whove been diligently going out on the appointed days to draw wherever you are in the globe are enjoined to have a grand day out drawing! We will be looking forward to seeing and sharing how the rest of the Sketchcrawling world faired on that day on the forums and blogs as always--were never without access to Dubyas internets. Well be joined by a stellar set of artists from Japan, I hear. Tadahiro Uesugi for one. How about that? Yoko Tanji. Whadaya say? There are more names Enrico mentioned to me but I think well hold the news release until were more certain. All I can say is I an star struck by the personages who might attend. Wish this was being filmed. Maybe we can do something about that. Too much...overloading.

Anyway, were leaving next Wednesday for Japan and will be back Tuesday the following week. Man, I wonder if I can rent a bike there to ride...hmmm.

Japan expo

A partir de jeudi cest la Japan expo, jy serai vendredi, samedi et dimanche, sans cosplay (oui, non, le petit sketch ci dessus, en plus de mentrainer à dessiner des Naruto, ma permis de réaliser que non, en fait).

Retrouvez le stand CFSL tout beau, avec les livres, mais aussi des posters et des t shirts! On* vous fera des beaux dessins, des démos et des blagues.

* Thorn, Brutal moineau, Samkat, Swarm, Grumly2002, Crowley, Marmotte, PE, Mémi, Muscarine, Manu Malin, The Black Frog (pour ses Carnets) et ptêtre Nénent si on lui dépanne une cuisse pour sassoir, et puis moi, tiens, jallais oublier. Plus vos serviteurs (cest eux qui le disent, pas moi) Made, Kness, Nicolab, Gary, Daji, et Elvire.

Joann Sfar Japan Sketchbook

Ever notice my fixation with all things Japanese? No? Well, try to pay attention. This post combines a few of my favorite things. First, awesome artist sketchbooks. And to be even more particular, French travel sketchbooks--namely, BD superstar Joann Sfars sketchbook. Second: He went to Japan. And he drew everything he saw it seems during his stay (he has scanned 45 pages of it for online viewing). This guys got a reputation for being prolific and this should give you a clue why. He just does not stop drawing.

Third: Amazing, on-the-fly ink sketches. During our correspondence last year Joann reveals that he draws his books in the same way he draws his cafe sketches--in, well...cafes (He was very generous with insights into his stance on "album" making [over a hundred]. Hes a huge talent AND a nice guy, too? Whoda thunk?). One can imagine how hed be relaxed, espresso on hand and casually completes page after page of his many books. Man, I gotta get to that kind of spontaneity and looseness someday. As our late great Alex Toth once said: Think more, draw less. I do the thinking more part but havent gotten to the drawing less. Working on it still.

Japan expo debrief

Café Salé à la Japan expo 2010, cétait hyper bien. Jai pas trop didées de speech pour dire comme cétait cool, mais ça me manque déjà. Plein de gens gentils et talentueux, et de très bons moments. Des kebab, plein de café, des pandas, des artbooks et de la rigolade.

Café Salé at the Japan expo 2010, that was ace. I dont have any idea for a speech right now, but I miss everyone already. So many kind and talented people, sweet moments. :)
